I found this interesting link about the culinary practices of the muslims: http://www.halalthailand.com/description/description.htm .

Sometime in the past, theese rules were imposed for health reasons, but they were maintained because they were incorporated into the sacred texts.

For instance, eating a fat meat as pork or drinking alcohol would not be recomended to a people who have to cope with the desert heat.

I'm interested in other practices around the world, and particularly what Kosher is (preferably in detail; found many sited, none with too much info on it).

In the mormon religon they have what is called the Word of Wisdom. Basically it suggests to avoid tobacoo, alcohaul, hot drinks (coffee and tea) and to eat meat sparingly. Caffinated sodas have also been added to the list by later "prophets"

However the word of wisdom was developed in the 19th century so it is not really that healthy of advice considering how healthy green tea is for you and the recent studies about the benefits of coffee and beer/wine.

Kosher goes as follows:

1) Dairy products shall not be eaten/drank directly after meat is eaten. The amout of time varies depending on each persons beliefs (Some wait 2 hours, others up till 6). Some people eat meat at lunch, and dairy at dinner.

2) Any type of pig food is forbidden. Same goes for seafood-lobster, squid,etc.... Eating fish is ok. Bugs are also out of the question (I think).

That's about it. Where I come from, everyone eats kosher, but I'm a vegeterian, so I really don't care to much for it.
