I saw a lot of complaints go by in this sub-forum about keeping up with the AI tech in the late game.
I played some Civ NiGHTS One City Challenge games at Warlord level to see what the issue really is. I found it is possible to keep pace but not by simply more researching or more expanding.

You really have to hustle after the science bonuses from policies, buildings, and wonders in the early game and get them all in one city so they build on each other. The Super Science City is back!

You must keep up Research Agreements with several AI continuously.

Entering the Industrial era, you should be deep into the rationalism tree and belting out Great People of various kinds due to Rationalism Social Policies that give bonuses to GP production. In the industrial era and continuing into early modern era, you should gain a tech every 3 turns (average) by some means or other (RA, Great Scientist, Free techs, own research). It is not unusual for an RA to complete multiple techs with all the RA boosting policies.

Around this period many of your ancient/classical era buildings go obsolete so your economy will be chaotic. You must use Great Engineers to rush replacement wonders, and some buildings if you don't have many production multipliers (or money).

City screens from my best effort so far
Civ 5 Vanilla, latest patch 1.0.2.21, some DLC
CIVILIZATION__NiGHTS(v. 121) 'updated for patch 1.0.1.674'
Warlord, Highlands map, small, standard time, Legendary start

Science output (would be higher with specialists as scientists)

Despite all that, this game lost to a Diplomatic effort by Catherine.

Imagine an AI empire with, oh, 4 of these cities... but without the intelligence to pursue RA and GS aggressively.

I've stopped playing a while till Marcus comes back. There is a definite balance problem that appears around midgame (I usually play on Immortal) and gets progressively worse. If one only had to concentrate on science then perhaps it would be manageable but you also have to run an economy and military. I've also noted (thru using spies) that the AI will dedicate at least a few cities completely to science research. I've had games where I was ahead in points but eventually late in the game one AI or another will leap out as they have the science on their side and just go on a war spree. If you find a way to beat that I'd like to know.:)
