LA police scrap plan to map Muslim enclaves

LOS ANGELES — Los Angeles Police Chief William Bratton said Thursday a plan to map out where Muslims lived had been scrapped, saying strong reaction from Muslim communities forced the department to change course.

“The proposal will not be moving forward,” Chief Bratton said, standing with several Muslim leaders after a closed-door meeting. “It's dead on arrival.”

Muslim groups praised the move, but said reversing the damage would take a long time.

“We hope to receive a written statement from the chief on the demise of the plan, and a recognition of the pain it caused in our communities,” said Shakeel Syed, executive director of the Islamic Shura Council of Southern California. “We'll also wait to get new ideas of engagement from the chief.”

Deputy Chief Michael P. Downing announced last week that the department's counterterrorism bureau planned to identify Muslim enclaves to determine which might be likely to become isolated and susceptible to “violent, ideologically based extremism.”

There are an estimated 500,000 Muslims in Los Angeles, Orange and Riverside counties.

The plan was immediately and roundly criticized by Muslim and civil rights groups who said it amounted to religious profiling. Many argued it would achieve the opposite of its intent, making Muslims hesitant to work with authorities.

“My first mistake was not reaching out to more groups” before announcing the plan, Deputy Chief Downing said.

Religious profiling, or pragmatic planning? Are muslim groups overreacting, or are the police stepping over the line?

TELL ME!!!! :)

The blacks would've been happier...

I fail to see the connection with purposely mapping out and plotting the locations of a specific religion, and discrimination.

We should also be mapping out young and middle aged black males, since, you know, they commit more crime.

My sarcasm meter is in the shop today, could you explain...? ;)

This is terrible folly from the L.A. police. By even suggesting this they are playing into the hands of the extremists who are trying to paint a picture of the USA's war on terror being a war on Islam.

tut tut:rolleyes:

Actually, they should map out the religions among every religion. That way, you get the data you want, but no idiot can shout "Discrimination!".

Secondly, it's usually the religions who do nonsensical acts of terror nowadays, so it's better to keep tabs on them anyway. ;)

All the religious people would cry discrimination; saying that the evil, godless atheistic government is persecuting them.

^You guys *do* understand that possibile implications of giving that kind of data to a government agency, right?

All it takes is for one intern to lose a laptop, and hundreds of thousands of people have their personal data comprimised.

I was joking, downtown.

I'm a freedomist, after all. You think I would even begin to support anything like this?

Like aneeshm said, I was joking.

As an aside: I know what it's like to think your personal data has been compromised. When I was working for DHS, we recieved a memo that said a hard drive containing employee SSNs had been stolen from DHS headquarters (funny, they're supposed to protect the nation, but can't secure their own HQ:crazyeye: ). Luckily, it turned out that my SSN was not one of the ones contained on that particular HD.
