Laptop lid, not in use, should be

It is scary how many people live alone nowadays. We need a pole about that percentage of CFC users. One day, hopefully.

It depends on circumstances. Leaving the house? Lid down. Sleep? Lid down. Otherwise, lid up.

Hmm depends.

For my old laptop the lid is down when not in use because it's old and doesn't go into sleep mode automatically anymore. Putting it in sleep mode requires pressing the power button once and then closing the lid. The fan is very noisy so not having it in sleep mode is not acceptable.

For the Surface it depends on if I'm using it at that particular time. If I'm going out the thing gets folded up and put on the bedside table so it looks tidy. If I'm wandering around the house and popping in and out of my room and checking the computer intermittently it'll stay open.

Laptop lid, when laptop is not in use as a laptop, should be kept up or down?

Poll coming. I live alone and nobody questions me on my computer choices.
Nowdays since without job I have both computer and TV on almost 24/7. I start feeling pathetic...

I am alone and quite well. There is necessarily nothing scary about it. On the contrary it can be a bit liberating...

Lucy used to post threads asking about how many chairs, lamps, etc. we own. We need one of those asking about bookshelves. I counted mine yesterday. I have over 30.

As for my laptop, when I'm out, it's down. When I'm in, awake, and away from it for prolonged periods (as in company is here), it's down (unless I want to show the company my lolcat pictures). When I'm asleep, it's down.

It's handy having a computer I can actually close. That way my younger cat is less likely to walk all over the keyboard and send strange emails to Freecycle moderators in the UK and Australia (she really did that once... ).

Does it automatically go into sleep mode (not hibernation) when you close the lid? How quick is it to start up again when you re-open the lid? Does it run hot if you leave the lid down or up? Do you need the lid-space for something else? Is it flat on the table or vertical on the floor? Is it on battery (lol) or plugged in?

At first I blanked on which of these "lid" threads I was in, so your post didn't make a lot of sense at first (it's 5 am and I haven't been to bed yet). :crazyeye:

I must have set these things at some point, but haven't paid a lot of attention lately. The laptop is flat on the table, and always plugged in. Sometimes the cat decides it would make a good napping place, but I don't let her get away with that.

Look. In prison, and French homes, laptops don't have lids. This is well known. They're a fire hazard, too.

My work laptop stays in my office lid up, makes it easy to wake up when I get to work everyday. But of course I don't use it as a laptop, it has a dock and two widescreen monitors.

My personal laptop stays lid down on the floor in the corner or under my bed. I only use it to Skype my fam once a week, and occasionally watch porn in bed.

Spoiler :
Desktop hooked up to my TV masterrace reporting in...:D

If I'm coming back shortly, lid up but locked (windows key + L). If I'm not going to use the computer in a while, shut down and lid down.

Down. What if, like, bats or something?

Lots of screaming from resident women will give you ample time to prioritize saving that which is most important to you. Like the laptop. Having womenfolk around is useful like that.

Down, but mostly because it's usually plugged into a docking dongle giving me a real keyboard/mouse and gloriously expansive dual monitors against which the laptops' puny 15" is ummm puny.

This isn't such a problem with newer models, but many laptops have very noisy and annoying fans when they're turned on. I get really annoyed when people refuse to shut it.
