Kami of Awakened Dreamers
Are you tired of having 2.5 - 3.5 gigs of RAM, a p3.0 dual processor and a decent vid card, but can't get past those late-game crashes?
Last night, i had a great time. i didn't think of it until then but its easy. set a large map with 6 rivals, or a huge map with 8 rivals. if you go tectonics 30% water, or archipeligo you should get both plenty of land to colonize and expand to and neighbors close enough to interact with - but too far away to "rush".
the intention is that you will get the large map you like. less civ's = bigger AI. it means the AI has less conflict before maturing into a real threat. less civ's = less lag between turns, ultimately. but over time the data piles up the same and the same number of cities are placed etc.
but you get more gameplay, more challenge. also, when your maintenance get's to be a burden, just grant independence. you can even think ahead and ask "is this a good independence spot?" you want your colony to be self sufficient without leeching you, but you also don't exactly want your colony to have oil, uranium and 3 aluminum.
