Really sad news. Col. Edward Shames, the last surviving officer of Easy Company, 506th PIR, 101st Airborne Division died December 3rd. Easy company was of course made famous by the band of brothers miniseries.
Bradford Freeman is now the only living member of easy company.
They didn't had it so easy. WW2 and the great depression were felt through the world (dust bowl was probably most felt in the US).
It's sad that in a couple of years there won't be any veterans of WW2 left.
But obviously, centenarians are very much the exception. Most of the adult males from my childhood, including my father, uncles, and childhood neighbors, were WWII veterans. And all of them are gone now.
