When I installed Civilization IV when it was first released, I had the same problem as many others in that, despite it saying I satisfied the minimum specs, I would start a new game but would rarely get past the loading screen and then all I'd have was a huge black background and nothing else. I understood that this was a problem with the video drivers on my graphics card.

My question is, does the patch remedy this problem, ie. can I now go out and repurchase the game or not?

Thanks very much
Will

The 1.09 (and hence the 1.52) patch corrected most of the black terrain problems, but there are a few remaining. Does your graphics card support TnL? If not, then that would have been the cause of the original problems, and it should be OK now. If it does, then I'd be less confident it'll be fixed by the 1.52 patch.

Shouldn't that be the other way around. There are still lots of users with 1.52 and no T&L (mainly IGP) who get the black terrain. According to Thamer, CivIV still doesn't support HW without T&L, it supports HW without shaders (DX7 vs. DX8). So if your HW doesn't support T&L, it's not going to work with 1.52.

1.09 contained a set of low res textures, that as far as I know do not require TnL, and so eliminated the black terrain problems for those who didn't have it. Post 1.09 Civ 4 will run without black terrain problems on many systems that don't even have dedicated graphics cards, let alone TnL support. There are still some black terrain problems I know, but I thought these were being caused by a different issue?

Have you really verified that these aren't IGPs which DO have T&L support (such as those listed here)?
