latin american civilization

Actually I have read Galeano, and I don't disagree completely with Venas Abiertas.

I do. You may agree with some things that are being said in the book, but the overall message is fatal. The worse thing is that it is fatal exactly to the people who Galeano claims to defend.

I mean, if you are convinced that everything that happens to you is the fault of everyone else but yourself, what is the chance that you have to better your own life?

You just would sit there crying, whining and yelling that "life is unfair to you" and that "you cannot do anything to better it" because it's all other's fault.

And that is exactly what is happening down there, sadly.

I'd like to see a few latin american civs, maybe Mexico, Brazil and Argentina. Even if it's just so I can use them in a scenario.

You'll be thrilled to hear that Venas Abiertas is required reading in a lot of American classes having to do with Latin America.

No I wont. It's absolutely logic. I don't know how students in the US interprete the requirement, but I can assure you that the intention behind that reading is to better understand what the average latinamerican thinks. Reading Venas Abiertas is probably the best way to understand that "view of the world". The US students have to be very careful though: the book is an indirect way to understand a point of view, but if a student takes the claims of the book seriously, he or she can become one more that thinks the way the book presents the world.

But no surprise here. Venas Abiertas is perhaps the best representation of the "latinamerican neural net", as sad as this may sound...

Aztecs? Incas?

I know you're asking for post-Spanish conquest Latin countries, but historically, there's not much in the way of a great Latin empire to base one on. Can't imagine what "advantages" a Castro leader would have. Special ability: cities lose population every turn, that swamp nearby civs with refugee camps. New luxury resource: Cuban cigars... which don't do you any good, because your civ is always under trade embargo with all neighboring civs.

Says the guy who has George Washington as avatar! :D

But indeed the U.S could have some unique bonuses:

New Leader: Harry S. Truman
Produces nuclear weapons 50% faster

Special unit: Slave worker
Reproduces itself as a result of all the rapings on slave women

Special building: Silicon Valley
Increases research output. Two free indian scientists (which of course causes India lose two scientists)

As long as we are giving civilizations special traits, lets go all the way.
France - Has to accept any offer made by Germany
China - all production 10% cheaper
India - loses a specialist to the US or England every turn
Germany - Must declare war on France at the beginning of each Age
Rome - civ spilts in two have way through the game
Aztec - loses a population to Spain during the first half of the game, loses a population to the US during the second half of the game
England - all tiles in London produce an extra gold (damn London real estate is expensive)
Russia - One unhappy person "disappears" each turn
US - Must run a budget deficit
Persia - can only nuke cities with Judism religion
Vikings - have to gift every specialist produced in the modern age to another civ (Noble Prize)
Inca - can import to civs with trade embargos and merc. civ
Carthage - Whenever you attack a country with elephants, one dies every other turn
Celtic - I got nothing, maybe something about Americans and tattoos?
Egypt - during the latter half of the game, your cities lose culture as it flows towards England and France
Greek - if either Greek or Ottoman found a city on an island the two countries are at a constant state of war
Ottoman - see Greek
Japanese - first nuke launched automatically lands on one of its cities
Malinese - you control the flow of gems
Mongol - if you become close to a domination victory, your leader dies and all your troops automatically return back to your capital
Spanish - every time you change state religions, every other religion is exsponged from your cities and your population drops
Arab - you must trade your oil to America, England, France, and Germany
Zulu - someone would just get upset about it

The news this morning reminded me I forgot one
Korea - can only participate in multilateral diplomacy talks

I never use nukes but I've always thought that the Civ producing Manhattan Project should get a couple free ones. It would be realistic and logical, but I guess it would be bad for game balance. As for slavery, the United States practiced it for less than a century and it was regionally contained for most of that time. Most other civs would be better suited for such a unit.

Those are pretty funny, although I have to point out that despite their reputation the French fought WWI for 4 miserable years, and it was Germany that gave up. Also, you forgot to break the Aztec game into thirds, before the Spanish massacre and the American diaspora there's the human sacrifice population loss. And I'll take the chance on Zulus - spearmen UU gets +100% vs gunpowder units.:spear:
And Egypt gets a bonus to Wonder production from whipping in cities with Judaism, but units disappear when crossing rivers without bridges. Also, in addition to the standard barbarian units, your farms are attacked by pillaging frogs.

the celts can get their own religion during the start of the games..
tree worshaping!:goodjob:

:goodjob: guys keep up the interesting dialog on this thread I find informative and enteraining thank:D

There's some scenarios that could be based, at least, in Southamerica...

Pacific War: Chile vs. Bolivia & Perú

Chaco War: Argentina vs Brasil vs Paraguay

Independence times: from 1805 to 1880 (this could be place for almost all Southamerican civilizations, including Suriname)

Vikings raided from the sea yes. To say Vikings were simply sea-robbers would be a horrendously innacurate stereotype. Just on their "sea-robbing" exploits alone they contributing immensely to naval technology and amphibious tactics. I can't think of anyone else who pulled off the naval landing and skirmishing to the same effect.

That would be cool, with each nation but Venezuela (and Brazil on the sidelines) starting out as vassals of Spain and Bolivar having to conquer enough of them to free them from vassalage and then convince them to become vassals or allies of the Second Venezuelan Republic.

How about a Mexican civ?

UU= Migrant Workers (+50% maintenance cost for all foreign cities close to Mexico's borders)

new luxury resource= Marijuana

New leader=Vincente Fox

Unique building= brothel (replaces theatre)

Please shut up. I only ask because I'm sure people will assume you're an American, and I don't want people thinking along the lines of "Ignorant Trash" for our UU.
