Leader Discussion - Gilgamesh

I'm very much against symmetric gameplay. We need more stuff that just works differently. Right now Gilgabro can be played two ways, one is a merry ally to everyone, with lots of endeavors, and the other is a warmonger with exactly one ally. I'd much prefer if the former would be intact as well, and I could make it my goal to befriend all diplo city states to achieve maximum diplo discount, eradicate every other independent power, and spam the endeavors.

I don't know if I'd advocate for nerfs, but I get the impression they wanted gilgamesh to feel like he made one buddy and then love bombed them. I don't think he quite achieves that and he more just plays the field. Maybe I'm wrong but I can see making it so he only gets free endeavours with one ally would make sense...But maybe be difficult to code.

That could be a replacement of the influence boost and multiple Endeavors. Free proposal to Allies and they can support them for free…but no duplicates.

Look at this cool Gilgamesh narrative event! I've never seen a quest with a requirement like this before.

There's also a narrative event (triggered by hitting a certain number of Ancient Era goodie huts) with several choices, one of which is to get +3 Influence on the palace for finding three more goody huts. Which is very possible very early on and invisible in the leader description, so I thought it was worth noting.

I'm fine with asymmetric gameplay, and I'm fine with "if everyone's busted, no one is", but I still think there should be a general balance of keeping everyone roughly equal power-wise, even for singleplayer. Having someone that's vastly more powerful than everyone else makes playing as them boring because there's no challenge, and playing against them frustrating because you're disadvantaged through no fault of your own.

I've played a few games with Gilgamesh in the workshop and another since the patch went live, and was just giving my initial impression that part of his kit is vastly stronger than most of everything else in the game. Like @Hellenism Salesman said, discussing balance is part of the fun.

Oh yeah, Gilgamesh gets to be Greece with every Civ. it's fairly neat.

Also wanted to point out that his Influence on kills applies to all Military Units, unlike Lakshmibai's where it is restricted to Land Military Units. This means he actually works just as well with naval civs, which is fortunate because Silla -> Chola is a very good combination for him that rewards his Alliances and lets him be an offensive menace.

These were a lot of fun to write, and a chance to play around with the character a bit. I think through the lines, through the different events, you get a sense of a vain, obsessed devoted friend, a lot of gym aesthetics.

Yeah, I would say he's one of the best leaders in terms of artistic design and characterization. Definitely up there for me with Harriet Tubman, Augustus and Edward Teach.

I think most importantly of all, there’s a sense of tragic compulsion to Gilgamesh. He is searching desperately for a friend throughout his events, but never truly finds one. It is almost as if he is trying to find a replacement to Enkidu, but just like how there is no elixir of immortality, there is no replacement to a loved one lost.

A very clever decision to mirror the somber ending of the original Epic.

Just barely managed to get this one and had to pay for open borders to get it. Well balanced and fun.

Do you know what the trigger was for this Narrative Event please?
Unfortunately, no, only that it happened early on in the Exploration Age and after I had already been leading in Influence for a while.

Turns out being able to stack Military Aid and getting influence to spend on war support from kills is pretty good for war...
Yeah, I think they could ditch both of those. Just the "All Endeavors, Allies support them for free, and if one Ally Extra War support" would be enough... Maybe influence if an ally kills an enemy unit, or you kill an enemy unit next to an ally.
