Hello everyone,

as you know, my plan for the next version of DoC is to include further new civilizations. As with all civilizations, these are also constrained by the assets available for the game. I have only limited ability to make assets myself and therefore have to rely on what has already been made by the modding community. In the worst case, a new civilization is not possible because there are no fitting assets.

In this thread I want to focus on leaders first. I have spent some time to search the download database and mods I am familiar with for viable leader art, but it is always possible that I missed something or didn't consider using a leader intended to represent a different person. So I would like to use this for community brainstorming on which leaders could be used.

If we can find no available leader, the next step would be to attempt to create a new leaderhead. As I said, I am not really able to do so myself. But perhaps someone here wants to try their hand at it. The other option would be to request it from more experienced creators in the graphics creation and customization forum. But before doing so, I would like to arrive at a more concrete description of what to expect. For example, most leaderheads are assembled from existing assets of other leaders, so it would be useful to establish a list of what could be used.

For now I want to focus on Shengzu of Qing, the Kangxi Emperor. Obviously this means that (probably to not much surprise) that a Manchu civilization intended to cover the Qing dynasty is under consideration for 1.19.

It would be great if we had leaderhead art approximating this portrayal of Kangxi:

Unfortunately, while there are many unused Chinese leaders in the database, they are all from Han Chinese rulers whose appearance doesn't really come close to his. Having a Manchu leader that makes him appear Han would undermine the distinction and purpose of this civilization.

First, I want to ask: is anyone aware of a leaderhead that could be used to fill this role? I am in particular asking with regard to the Chinese Civ4 community. I am aware that there are several mods in the Chinese speaking community that aren't available on CFC, and so I am hoping that someone created a Kangxi leaderhead (or perhaps another Manchu emperor) for one of its historical scenarios. It would be very helpful for me if someone from that community, or someone who speaks Chinese and can check, would let me know.

Second, if that is not successful, I want to consider what a Kangxi leaderhead should look like if it needs to be created. Here are my thoughts:
  • Face and beard from Genghis LH: there is actually surprising similarity between that leaderhead and the depiction above, including the skin colour. Alternatively, the Wang Kon face could also work.
  • Headdress from Kublai LH: it's not exactly the same, but it could work.
  • Robes from Taizong LH: match he overall design and appearance. Taizong's animations might also be fitting.
I appreciate any help and additional thoughts.

I tried looking through tieba using google translate but couldn't find anything. There was a playthrough thread of old modded version of DoC with different leaders added but the Kangxi emperor was a static image. @soul-breathing I think might have the most insight?

The closest I could find was this rendition of Songtsen Gampo:

It'd be great if some of the old leaderhead modders could be coaxed out of retirement

Thanks for looking. That's disappointing though, I had hoped that there was maybe something to find.

Yeah I am aware of Cixi but as you say, I don't think she is very reflective of the Qing dynasty.

Oh, interesting. That one is quite good.
