It's a hard life being a civIII enthusiast without patience. The manual is my best remedy for insomnia and the the editor and help function bug me. So I'm learning on the job! But there are still some really easy tricks I just don't seem to get. Like:
- How do I turn of the end of game? By the time I'm even ready to build a spaceship or want to take over the world, the game ends. It's 2050, time to quit. No need to tell you, that this is a pain in the you know what.
- Halfway through the game I usually fall behind in technology, making me an easy pray for agressors. I tell tell them to bugger off, with the result that the whole worlds out to kill me. How do I keep that from happening?
- Is it better to let my workers move manually or automaticly?
- Is it necessery for me to let my governor do all the work for me, or is it just better that way?
- I usually rush to communism, but I'm not sure if that's the right thing to do. Any suggestions?
- How the hell do I get in the UN?
- Last but not least, and I'm afraid to admit, I suck at tougher levels. ANY tougher level.

1.You can't turn off the end of the game, but you can play on without score.

2. Keep up in research and be strong enough or give in to their demands.

3. It's more efficient to move them manually.

4. Same as above better to do it yourself then the govenor.

5. For research both Republic and Democracy is better then Comunism. Go to Republic as fast as possible, then maybe change to Demoracy for faster workers.

6. You need to get the right tech to be able to build the wonder. You need Computers for the UN wonder.

About the sucking part, practice, practice and some more practice.

You can change the number of turns in the game in the editor. Not sure where since I have never touched it.

This is where I catch up... What are the situations in your game, are you always at war?? if so, warfare tends to stiffle your scientific research a bit. If you tell the AI to bugger off and he is militarily stronger, he will declare war.

Is it better to let my workers move manually or automaticly?

Manually. At least this is my opinion

Is it necessery for me to let my governor do all the work for me, or is it just better that way?

I never use the governor. They are idiots. Again, my opinion

I usually rush to communism, but I'm not sure if that's the right thing to do. Any suggestions?

No opinion of this.

How the hell do I get in the UN?

Are you talking about being a nominee for election to S.G.? If so, I am not sure what the qualifications are but you do need to be one of the largetest and strongest civs.

To qualify as a candidate in the UN Elections, you need to either have built the actuall UN Great Wonder, have the biggest population, or the biggest land area. If all three of those are held by the same civ (not uncommon!), the civ with the second greatest population also gets to be a candidate.

actually you need fission

Check out the Strategy Articles forum for lots of very useful guides.

Note that some things have changed from PTW to Conquests (like corruption, for the moment), so not all are totally up to date. If you are not sure post in the relevant thread and someone will tell you.

And welcome to CFC!

can you post in these threads if the last post is many months old?, I did that and got scolded for reviving an very old thread when I was new here, it seems there are alot of obsolete threads in those articles now

I just checked and the whole front page (45 threads) seem very relevant. The oldest 3 are:

Free Palace Jump by Dave McW
The very basics of micromanagement by Ronald
Building an empire of Metropolises by Bamspeedy

These all seem relevant, as do most of the ones above them. And I wouldn't worry about someone scolding you for posting in one - they shouldn't be doing that to someone who is new anyway...

You don't have to post to learn from them - just read 'em.
Some of the older articles are so old, they're of no value anymore since they're based on parts of the game that have changed with later patches and upgrades. Usually if someone gets scolded, it's for resurrecting one of those threads.

And technically, the mods would rather you revive an older thread than start a new one, if you have relevant material to add. If you're just spamming the thread, then yeah, they'll take notice and issue a warning.

Keep in mind, there is the quick answers thread stickied to the top of page one. It is one of the four stickied threads we have there. Feel free to post your questions there. If it requires more discussion, then it can be moved to it's own unique thread.

To change the number of turns, you'll need to go to the properties page in the editor. The properties button is the one that looks like a page with a finger pointing at it. You need to look at the bottom of the dialog box, left hand side, under "Time Options." You need to turn on "Time Limit" and then you can set the number of turns.

I would stay out of communism, myself. In fact, I've managed to play civ3 for almost two years now without touching that form of gov't. Sure, it has some advantages, like spreading corruption out throughout the civ, but by the time corruption is an issue for me, I can usually afford to rush courthouses and/or police stations. So if you're using the gov't for that, there are better ways to do it. If you're doing it to draft citizens, well, then IMHO you need to rethink how you build your units. A drafted citizen starts out at two HP, whereas a veteran unit starts out at four. So basically, a drafted unit is worth half of a regular unit. Not to say they aren't useful at times, and that they can't become worth a normal unit. . . it just may take time. Republic with Universal Sufferage is my preferred gov't. Especially when someone else starts the war. Then WW for me is almost non-existant.

I do a mixture of automated/manual workers. I get my tiles where I like them, and then usually automate the workers, for the squares I don't care about or if all squares are done and I want RRs there. And when I first get RRS, I always RR the higher production/food squares first.

And to get better, the best thing to do is read up on the War Academy, this sub forum, and Civ 3 - Strategy & Tips sub forum. And above all, don't be afaid to ask for help! All of us here were where you're at now, at one time or another. So we remember what it's like. . .
