I pinged Firaxis about this, and got this response:

I asked Jesse Smith (the producer) about this and he told me that Atari will be making the Extras available for download. He also told me that it is ok for people to post the contents of the Extras folder (winter terrain, european terrain, ww2 units, medieval japan units, prehistoric units).

I was beginning to wonder when someone was going to question this. I thought LouLong had received some special permission or something. Apparently not. How bold! And none of the mods said anything?!

Well, great. I'm glad these are available.

Thanks for making things "sure" and official.
I am surprised by the Japanese set though since that limits the new units in C3C but well.
Should I upload the Japanese units ? Anybody to replace me for this turn ? :)

Bold ? Well, I was not the first to do it. And I really got the idea this had been made legal. I don't think I am famous over the boards for illegal stuff. (I hope).

Don't worry, Col. Kraken. I questioned this even before LouLong posted his threads. ;)

We were going by what had been announced at another site where an administrator said he had talked with Firaxis, and they had said to go ahead and post them. While I had no reason to distrust the other site, I did ask for more *solid* proof that it was legal. When I didn't get any, I just asked Firaxis myself. :)

Maybe I'm just an old fuddy-duddy, but over the years, I have learned the value of having somthing solid for CYA purposes. ;)

this really just confirms even more that ptw was never really an expansion..just a glorified "patch"

MC: I never doubted you. ;) (If I had, LouLong's threads would have been DOA.)

But going to a website, where "so-and-so says somebody from Firaxis says ..." just doesn't give me that *warm fuzzy*. Like I said above, I've learned the value of "CYA". ;)

Never question the wisdom of our dear Padma! :D

What about pedia and units_32?

units_32, yes. Pedia icons, no. As everybody's aware, I've got definite beef with Firaxis for not giving us Pedia icons!

Making Pedia icons takes about 1/20th the time to make the actual units! Hello? Was somebody paying attention there?

Would you rather have the units not available for download? Then mod makers couldn't use them except for people who bought PTW and not C3C. And stores would stop selling PTW because C3C has almost everything from it. So less people would get to play your mod.

read between the lines....im not complaining bout the units being able to be downloaded..im complaining firaxis releasing a ****ty game called ptw..geez.....testy arent we

I had playing and modding fun with PTW for almost a year, so I don't regret buying it even if it is obsolte now. Can't argue that it wasn't good expansion though.

I agree with you. I had fun for a year myself. I do feel it was more of a glorified patch, but I also feel it payed for the development of Conquests, which still doesn't live up to my expectations, but is a big improvement for modding. As far as my expectations go, not very many games live up to my expectations. For some reason games always have to have limits. I hate limits.
