Unless you have a self esteem issue you should be proud to be who you are and be proud of your own accomplishments.

Most people who are actively proud of their are are morons. You shouldn't be ashamed of it, but if you define yourself by the color of your skin, then that's pretty stupid.

But yeah, there definitely is a double standard - if you're black, and you form a "pro-black" organization that is proud of being black, etc, etc then everyone loves you. If you're white and you form a pro-white organization and talk about how wonderful it is being white and its' the best and so on and so forth, you're a Nazi, which doesn't strike me as fair. Of course, I imagine this perception is helped along by the fact that most of the people who are interested in forming pro-white organizations really are Neo-Nazi's or resurgent Klanners.

You're right, the connotations are completely different. That's basically for two reasons.

Firstly, the histories are different. "White pride" is inseparably linked to centuries of white supremacy and race-based privilige, the KKK and lynchings, to segregation, "separate but equal", to slavery, and to a century or two of social darwinist thought. That's inescapable. "Black pride" or any other "pride" has no possible analogue in the United States or most of the rest of the west. This is also linked to the second reason:

Pride groups, or even just exclusive organisations, have a totally different set of connotations depending on whether they're a dominant social group or a marginalised one. "Gay pride" mostly means "not shame" and therefore doesn't carry supremacist connotations. A woman's only organisation tends to carry notions of redressing marginalisation, not reinforcing domination. Similarly, "black pride" or whatever, being historically a minority and marginalised identity, mostly means creating a separate space and identity from dominant, default (white, male, nominally christian) social norms, and doesn't come across as being about hate and keeping people down. It's not possible for whites, or any other dominant group in any other given society, to do something analogous, and that is because they *are* the dominant, default identity.

You can call this a double standard, and if you're being technical, it is. But, then, there's a double standard throughout society, in that society and culture caters for you differently depending on whether you're an "insider" or an "outsider". Focussing on this sort of "double standard" as an excuse to whine that OMG WHITES ARE TREATED UNFAIRLY, as some do, misses the point. Yeah, there's a double standard, and yeah, it's a fairly common sense one. The real question is why does it seem so intrinsically wrong and different for there to be "white pride" or "straight pride." Blaming black people for being racists is the worst possible response. Rather, I think these two reasons are basically why... the continued existance of white privilege, male privilege, and straight privilege is what makes the double standard exist. If there was real, substantial, social and cultural equality this double standard wouldn't exist, but the fact that the double standard exists isn't the fault of gay activists or black pride groups or whatever. Those things are merely manifestations of said cultural double standard.

Edit: After a quick look through wiki, seems the US celebrates it on October 2nd... which is yesterday. Still, from what I see in that list most of the world has it on June 1st.
