Let's Play: Deity BC Space: Strategies from a 10 year veteran

Not sure how some people feel about this. Ya'know that random event that gives you a few dozen beakers? or a few hundred. Well, I think it gives you 15% of whatever you're teching. Long story short:

T272

+2293:science: towards Communism
Now Kremlin is T274 instead of 275  Back to planning stage to change some builds.

I was tempted to write an extremely sarcastic comment about how rng results mean that the game isn't valid, but I think merely mentioning my temptation to do such suffices. :)

Golden Age goes to 312 because of Sports League, right?

The Devil's Luck! :smoke:
I can count the times I've gotten Sports League random event on 1 hand.

Only 1 step away from Grandmaster Cheat-Luck..
Spoiler :

Calculate the odds to get Iron in borders by Turn 9?
Maybe 1 in 100,000 I'd say.

Riverside Jungle Rice go!

Ahhhhh yes.

Nice. What's this game going to be? I see epic speed, Liz.

It's for the challenge series espionage game.
https://forums.civfanatics.com/threads/challenge-xix-08.622239/

It really got out of hand.
Spoiler :
Needed a Holy City and Open Borders with my Espionage victim DeGaulle, so I tried to kill 2 birds with 1 stone.
Spoiler :

Bribed Gandhi to DoW France.
Ghandi's Deity army was too large for me to beat, so I gifted France a City at the north pole to lure it away.
Gandhi's army didn't move the 1st turn, so bought a map from Mansa, then gifted it to Gandhi so he'd know it was up there.
Spoiler :

Gandhi's army then marched straight to the north pole and captured France's only non-island city!
Then I took took Ghandi's lightly defended double shrine city and signed open borders with my war partner France.

The city made 62:gold: per turn doing nothing!
So I whipped a Castle complete and stuck my army there to prevent any -62:gold: per turn revolts from happening.
Or the city flipping back!
Even at 2% revolt odds, I still had one scary 4 turn revolt.
A 2nd revolt would have given the city back to Gandhi since "City Flipping After Conquest" was enabled.
Spoiler :

Signed peace with Gandhi before his Stack of Doom could reach my capital from the north pole.

Things went nuts when it dawned on me that any French mainland cities would be attacked every few turns, and Closed Borders with everyone but France wasn't enough.
Had to move capital.
Spoiler :

Near the end I discovered a bug with the -20% Trade Routes :espionage: bonus.
It activates when the AI's city forms a trade route with a city in the player's empire.
I had a 100% chance to get it because France only had Open Borders with me. :D

And then the cities revolted and the -20% bonus seems to have broken when they came out of revolt?!
Spoiler :

First it happened to Legendary City 2

Then it happened to Legendary City 3

I thought maybe the cities desynched from my Berlin city, so I renamed Berlin to London 2, but my -20% trade route bonus didn't come back.

The Grand Strategy I used was stolen from this game. :mischief:

Turnset T271 - T275
(Communism, Kremlin)

T271

Last thing reported was...
Take another northern, garbage city from Mansa...for 101:gold: though.
Pillage Mansa
like mad! over 100 :gold:!

Continuing...

I take Slavery, OR and my gpt drops like -200+ Some of that is the specialists getting re-assigned poorly. I MM the cities and I think it was closer to -100gpt hit.

T272

pillage and take Mansa's only city on my mainland other than his capital.
Archaeologists find ancient texts in the dessert: +2293:science: towards Communism , yea that's plausible

I need to cancel a few metal gifts to get exactly 200 hammers for execs in two cities. I hope to gift lots next turn.

T273
Biology GS
is completed even tho I'm in slavery
Almost ready to bulb, but wait! first get population as high as possible...

Take capitial Timbuktu, defended by a whopping 2 longbows, it gets treb, cannon bombard, then

Double Bulb 17424:science: into Biology (19k+)

Finally, because Bio is bulbed, I can trade for Compass, otherwise the bulbs would have gone to Optics, then Astro, Physics...
Could get it from my vassal, Sal, but I want Liz's 130:gold: anyway, so she gets Paper.

Washington reaches size 14 also. I have 4 cities at 14. Almost too late to matter, but every drop counts at this point.

.............. Exec spread news...............
13 corps--the max possible (1, 2, 4, 8, 13)
But I'll only have 17 next turn.
My math failed me again and Cuzco will not be able to make a 4th exec. Not even close. If I had known (and I should have...I'm playing a bit fast) I could have substituted another city, but now workers can't move and chop. Oh how wonderful fast workers would be :yup:

But! all is not lost. I can turn this into an opportunity for :gold:
I can start an exec somewhere--not sure yet. Then next turn whip it and remove it from the queue for 250:gold:

Or better, try to prevent the failgold from resolving and whip after Kremlin. Not sure I have the right kind of city for this.
------------- End Exec News----------------

Pillage about 45.
Anyone know how much gold you get for pillaging a fort?

(tomorrow) T274 Communism T275 Kremlin

CF Mansa

I've been starting 6 missionaries each turn, assuming a good plan will gel soon.

274

Communism
You may recall I've been going about 70-80% lately cus cash is tight. Now I have very few conquest targets left and have to set research down to 50%. I just can't seem to squeeze out Biology in 1 turn. It's not urgent tho.

Chop 7
for 2460+ into Kremlin

DoW Vicky
(plus her vassal Ragnar) Goal is to take her last 2 islands and wipe her off the map. Will take several turns with only one galley.

275

:band:

Kremlin
Hard to believe I was going to skip this.

DoW Mansa...No, wait.

Need to stop and make major plans.

Need to stop playing a bit and make major plans.
- Should I build 2 cats in many, many cities right now? (one last iron giveaway) Recall: these are to protect my army, boats and workers outside my territory.

- Now that Krelmin is alive, should I just whip all prepped items and go back to caste for a while? too soon? wait for sushi to grow the GPfarms.

- Continue prepping missionaries?

- I need to track all the possible sources of strike gold generation...and overwhipped workboat here, steal over there, HE city overflow gold, blah, blah

- Start strike when?

- Take Bureaucracy when? probably same turn as strike

- whip a bunch of workboats now? or prep them for big OF gold?

- whip more settlers (I've already whipped quite a few to OF into execs)

- Plan final 'big' war on Liz. Some Knights have already arrived overseas.

Cats

I'm leaning towards building them. If I run out of quechua (and I don't have all that many), my knights will start dying if I don't have cats.
Who knows when I'm done with Liz, and then when will I be done messing around with vassal creation. Maybe if I'd played strike this way before, I'd be more brave.

The cost is that I'm not building wealth in dozens of cities for 2t. And then the loss of dozens of population, and the cost of unit maintenance.

But! if I start strike soon, then I don't care that I whipped away a worked coastal tile. Nor do I care about unit costs.
The loss for not building wealth/research is a loss I have to take eventually. Ideally, I suppose, I'd take that loss after sushi & AssemLine. But I'll be deep into Mining Inc, and I won't want to give away 16 iron to build cats.

Sounds like I need to pick a turn for strike. It's T275 now, Kremlin (K) built this turn. Earlier I said strike would be turn K+2. That'd be T277 instead of what I expected would be T278 (recall I got a tech boost from a random event.) The Cats plan would require that I whip them all T276, then build a 2nd cat everywhere with overflow on T277, so I couldn't take iron back until T278. Seems like an ideal turn for strike. At that point my corporations will be up to 36.

Or! what if I just whip one cat in each city (could take iron back 1t sooner) and use the overflow to create strike gold. Like tack the cat OF onto a whipped workboat.

I think many are reading! Unfortunately, as many here, I would not be able to answer any of the question you write here (you're thinking out loud anyway).
It's hard to write any comment on your game appart from "impressive" :D I'm happy you found the motivation to continue with this game and to write report.

How much food do you expect to get from sushi? +50:food:? +60:food:? -- aren't you worried about the unhappiness caused by whipping this much, as most of your cities will be size 20+? Or does the +16 happy from colonies combined with the lack of emancipation anger erase any fear of having unhappy cities?

You bring up a good point on happiness. I've been relying on that +16, but maybe I should try to contain myself. I woke up this morning with a new plan for strike gold that coincidentally uses less whipping--Coming soon.

Sushi food: IIRC, I've been using +50:food: as a rough number. But that might have been the max the map offers. I'm not sure my food will get that high. That would be 136 resources

Just a side-question related to Strike - if control Cristo Redentor wonder - does Strike mechanism "resets to 0" if change to SP for 1 turn or it keeps its progression forward?

I've been stressing over strike gold for some time. Here's the reality.
Corp spread is slow for the first couple turns, then needs 250gpt....but only for 10 turns while spreading to the mainland. Then it slows to 100 or 150gpt spreading to islands.
I can stop prepping missionaries now and use the missionary gold I already have prepared, whipping 2 per turn for 5-6 turns. This carries me thru the -250gpt section of mining spread.

Now for the new thoughts:

My HE/capital city (pre-factory) can produce over 100gpt. Enough overflow gold to pay for 2 island spreads. Little to no whipping needed elsewhere. Do that until Medicine.
 But now I'm thinking my capital should grow a bit so it's size is not crippled after producing 3 sushi execs. I used all my forests.
 No, then I remembered I'll be in Bureaucracy and I can build the 1st 2 execs without whipping. I'll need to 2-whip the last one or possibly 3-whip a levee and build the exec 1t late with overflow.

Anyway....
Then Sushi hits and after a couple turns, now I need 350gpt to pay for sushi mainland spread and mining islands. Again for just 10-12 turns.
With ~125 coming from HE/capital city, I can get the other 225gpt from 0h-whipping a mining exec for failgold. 1 whip per turn (saving on happiness,) but still 2 population. And no wasted hammers building and disbanding missionaries. Sadly, I do need to remain in slavery.

Another idea brewing is to slow mining island spread. Sometimes those will be size 1 islands with no factory coming any time soon, so why rush them.
Instead, I could put about 100h into a partial mining exec. Recall, that I'm in strike and Mining is fully turned on so 100hpt is normal output for most mining cities. Could be 150h if there is some overflow in the city.
Now, I can whip only 1 population (+168h) in 1 city to get about 250-300:gold: That, along with HE city, is enough.
- catch is: it only works every other turn, not every turn.
- and it prevents you from doing the previous idea of 0h-whipping an exec.
- cost to my progress: After 10 turns, I've only spread to 20 islands instead of 25.

Just a side-question related to Strike - if control Cristo Redentor wonder - does Strike mechanism "resets to 0" if change to SP for 1 turn or it keeps its progression forward?
Strike does not reset, but that's good outside-the-box thinking.
