In the current LHC 38 (Roosevelt) game ....
Spoiler :
, I stayed isolated for a long time until a couple of AIs found me, at which point I did a combination of building caravels, trading for their maps, and sending my caravels to circumnavigate all the other continents to officially meet all of the AIs and "find" all their coastal cities, and opened borders with everyone willing to do so. To my shock and surprise, when I finally tech'd Astronomy, my income went down  because I lost the Colossos, as expected, but gained no international trade at all.

How can this happen? Would the AIs all have to be running Mercantilism or something like that? Do I have to be running some other economy civic than Decentralization? I've attached a saved game from the turn after Astronomy in case it helps anyone figure things out.

If you're running Mercantilism or all of the civs you have open borders with have Mercantilism you won't get international trade routes.

Trade routes are a very melindrous issue and I already noticed in isolated starts that trade routes have some dificulty to reset when Astro is discovered, probably because the trade network has to be reset. I'm pretty sure that will come back to the normal soon.

That was a guess, but isn't it a huge coincidence if all of the AIs that can do so are running mercantilism? Three of the open-border AIs (Victoria, Frederick, and Wang Kon) have Economics, but according to the BUG mod foreign advisor's tech trade page, two of them (Isabella and Kublai Khan) don't so can't be Mercantile (the save I posted is from the turn before I opened borders with those two; I can update the attachment if that matters).

Oops, it just takes Banking to run Mercantilism, and all of the AIs may have had that; it's Free Market that comes with Economics. I proceeded 4 more turns, Wang went Free Market, and suddenly I had trade with Korea. So I suppose that, coincidence or not, all the other AIs were running Mercantilism, and the other 2 with Economics haven't switched to FM yet.

Does having a Decentralized economy have any effect on intercontinental trade?
