As we can finish liberalism easily, we should use the liberalism free tech to the best of our ability. In order to conserve space, I have limited the techs to ones that are of equal or greater value than liberalism and have only used techs in our age. If you choose "other", please state your desired tech.

What I miss in this poll is the explanation Dutchfire gave to his Liberalism slingshot idea. You link to the topic but I really appreciate it if you summarised it in your poll message.

The reason I say this is that Democracy cannot be researched straight away. Unless you know the Tech Tree by heart and just loaded the latest save that may have gone unnoticed. In order to research Democracy Dutchfire suggested to research Nationalism and Constitution now and cancel the current Liberalism research. When we have researched Nationalism and Democracy we switch back to Liberalism and choose Democracy.

I have a hard time filtering that discussion out from this poll.

When you make the choice you must also look at the costs of the tech, and there is a speciality that only with Astro cost 1 beaker = 1 commerce, all the other techs have 1 commerce = 1.2 beaker
    Also is
    Democracy ~ 3337 commerce
    Astro ~ 2860 commerce
    Rifling ~ 2860 commerce
Constitution, military tradition ~ 2384 commerce
Nationalism, chemistry, replacable ~ 2145 commerce
    Corporation ~ 1907 commerce

    so i vote for Astro

I think we must go on with Liberalism until researched, least another steal
    us the bonus.

So, three techs look nice to me:

    a) Astronomy: the most expensive; really opens the sea; top important.
But perhaps not urgent, not immediately rewarding.

    b) Nationalism: very expensive; Taj Mahal; on the way for very important
techs. But almost no immediate rewards.

    c) Replaceable Parts: very expensive; automatic and immediate rewards
(hammers); really nice for hybrid cities and we have a lot of them.
But the tech path is not right now the most desirable.

So, no best one. Hard choice.

But, because I believe in "our continent first" and that we have the upper
hand now, I shall vote for Replaceable Parts.

    Best regards,

Also, Astronomy is key for trading resources with the other continent.
Astronomy impacts both trade and diplomacy, as well as warfare and colonization. A Gameshifter.

Do we need resources then? I think our populace is quite happy. And we have access to Iron.

We may trade for diplomatic reasons. We always need more trade.

Astronomy, trading with neighbours? That's not mongol :p
I'd prefer to keep things to our continent as much as possible. All those overseas things don't usually work out great, especially when there are nutjobs like Monte and Toku around.

Also I'd like to add that going the Democracy way will set us up for getting Military Tradition, a great military tech.

If a tie at the end of the poll, is it for Head Scientist to decide?

I'd definitely go for democracy there are a couple of good civics to grab with it, which will be very useful for our cities running large numbers of cottages, plus it grants us the ability to build the statue of liberty, one of my favorite wonders, we've seen the dramatic effect of 1 free specialist per city from mercantilism, a 2nd free specialist from the statue of liberty would be a huge plus.
