WOULD YOU KINDLY read this article?

    http://news.yahoo.com/blogs/lookout...artificial-libertarian-islands-140840896.html

This is practically how the game Bioshock started. Will this project open the way for new ways of thinking or will it end with everyone dead and/or horribly mutilated living in fear of a guy in a deep diving suit with a drill for a hand that hangs around a little girl in a dress?

I love the idea, though in my fantasies those experimental mini nations would be in Siberia :D

That's a good thread title :goodjob:.

Will probably run out of money before anything valuable comes out of it.
And if not, then it will also not become a bizarre perverted zoo or something like that, unless the take only total idiots for their "experiment". If the population is homogenious, then it will probably create a small copy of their native culture, else it will probably not last that long (too artificial, imho).
    Let's see.

I'm more concerned about the other billionaire, the one sculpting himself a mountain lair. He says he'll use it to make a clock, but... :scared:

I like this idea. I'd do SCIENCE! there.

I'm a fan of Peter Thiel. He helped fund the MPrize (as part of the immortality movement) for awhile

I hope the guy enjoys throwing all his money away. And I'd really like to see him try it.

Will become a casino haven that seeks to attract boatloads of statist sheep so that they may freely spend their wealth on funding the libertarian gambling paradise, which will see most of its inhabitants who earn their livelihood there working for the same industry that will eventually see collusion amongst the operators and the creation of a government of sorts. Oops.

I don't like the idea of these micronations. I'd rather see them, after they cease to be used for their initial purpose, given to the UN or something for nature preserves. Aquatic life thrives around those things.

It will be most interesting to see the economy.

If it's subsistence, it will be hilarious, since that's more on par with primitive communism than anything else.

I was under the impression that Sealand, for example, was quite profitable. This could be quite a lucrative venture.

You left off the list doomsday lasers. The day the crazy, secluded billionaire/inventor can't own a doomsday device is the day freedom dies.

I wonder..... How long until a Chinese/Russian/British/[insert people who hate freedom] 'accidentaly' crash something into it and it sinks? I would love to see the reactions and results.

In all seriousness, this sounds alot like Brave New World's 'Alpha Exile Island'. Of course it will work pretty well with only rich people and ideolouges there, but how many are going to want to wash the dishes for someone else. I can't imagine John Galt washing his own dishes, cleaning his house, or providing services to his wife when there is a greater task: the search for more money.

EDIT: I just thought of a great use for this floating island! A refuge for all those people who just dream of going Galt on the rest of us poor, deluded sheeple.

If they had free flow of capital without taxation then it could attract a lot of money from people trapped in the World's various unfree countries or socialist "paradises" like we have in Europe.

There is no reason at all why this couldn't work, except that people of ability create wealth extremely quickly, and that wealth then brings the resentful and the violent.

So if anything, they are much more likely to become victims of their own success - unless they can also organise private military forces, which is unlikely and also kind of defeats the point.

It will be interesting to have at least one free country on Earth though - however, the example it would set would be too dangerous for that large majority who hate individualism and progress.

Looser building regulations, unrestricted gun ownership, and no minimum wage... doesn't that sound like Victorian Britain to you?

In a true libertarian state, there would be no punishment for murder. I say that, once they establish their floating islands, the US gov't should hire marauding sea-bandits to plunder this island into nonexistance.

10 bucks says after everyone arrives the guy with the biggest guns stages a coup and takes over as eternal president for life.

    Also
Another 10 bucks says this islands demise will be at the hands of an undersea earthquake.

$20 the island gets destroyed because a Saudi oil tanker 'accidentaly' hits it. I could see that happening. In the middle of the ocean, nobody can hear you scream as a supertanker plows right through your house.
