Limit to number of Armies you can build ?

Thread title says it all. Are there limits to the numbers of armies you can build per era ?

I'm pretty sure I had four in the industrial age and went I went to build more I couldn't . I then went back to the city some turns later and I noticed that I could build more.

Sorry can't be more specific than that - it may have been an era change or new tech but I can't find anything in the documentation. I have also search the forms but can't pick out any thread that has it. I apologize if wrong and it is in there somewhere but so little time so much info.

Perhaps I should save more often and then I can go back I check but this way I have have the temptation to replay turns again. Let the dice fall where the may

I don't know much about armies, but I do know you have to have four cities for every army you build. Do you remember how many cities you had?

I have 15 on my continent. I kicked the Americans off it along time ago. They now have an island all to themselves I'm not in to genocide (unlike the AI).

I'm a few techs in to the modern age playing on Regent level and doing my best to thwart the Germans

One army for every four cities, that's it.

Yeah - cheers - I now realise I only got to build more when I was walking across another continent capturing more cities.
