Linux on XBOX

Won't you get locked out of Live if you do that?

EDIT: Xbox runs a 744 Mhz Celeron??? That's worse then my computer, and mine is pretty bad! Judging by the graphics, I thought it would be more...

oh and Linux on the x-box, yesssssssssssssssssssssssssss. thats what i like to see

I can't remember if it was this group or another...but one group was holding contests/offering prizes for people successfully hacking Xboxes, got sued over it, and had to cease 'operations'.

For Xbox live, if they detect a modded Xbox, that machine is banned. There may already be ways around that (ways to disable the chips before going on Live and such), but if you slip and get detected, you're gone.

It also doesn't have the massive overhead of Windows. Any machine dedicated to one purpose can do far better than a multi-purpose one...it's single-tasking, for example.

Why would you want to put linux on an xbox? You can get a cheap and fairly good computer that way. XBoxes are sold at a heavy loss, with profits then made from game sales.

I agree here and see the validity in this.

However- that does not discount the fact that people who do this are nerds :p

And strangely, mod chips are NOT illegal in Australia, and S0ny has taken the matter to court, and lost.

Why? In Australia you are allowed to install mod chips IF their main purpose not to override copy protection systems for illegal copying. The Xbox mod chip is designed to let unsigned code run, which isn't illegal. The PS1 mod chip is intended to override regional codes, which isn't illegal in Australia either. If, as a side effect, a copy protection is lost, well sony or M$ has to live with it, because their copy protection methods interfered with our rights.

Many CD copy protection systems like Starforce are not permitted for sale in Australia because they don't comply with the CD code of standards. Starforce CDs wont run in all CD players, so they cannot be sold as CDs or bear the Compact Disc label.

Hacking any device is legal, including any game system. Just as long as you are not pirating. So linux on Xbox is not illegal, and M$ has no right to remove people's rights to use a console that they own and use legally.

Now lets all live in Australia!
