Linux

This probably belongs in a different thread, but I was just curious. My wife has to use Windows and connects to a school district server. I am concerned about viruses on my Windows hard drive. It is not protected. If a virus attacks my computer can it also affect hardware? or at worst I will have to repartition and re-install?
At worst you'll have to repartition and reinstall. Viruses generally can not harm hardware.

Both are excellent distros. RH is more commercially-oriented - it is designed to be used in the workplace. Knoppix' primary target is the home user.

By default, RH uses the Gnome desktop, Knoppix uses KDE.

RH may make you jump through some extra hoops to get your multimedia stuff working, and IIRC, to be able to read ntfs-formatted filesystems (a must if you are dual-booting). Knoppix includes all that stuff on the disk, I believe.

One nice thing about Knoppix is that it is designed as a "live-cd". You boot the machine with Knoppix in the drive, and you can "test-drive" the entire distro, without touching your hard drive. Everything is done in a virtual disk in memory. (You *can* save things to hard disk/floppy/USB stick/whatever, but you have to explicitly mount the device for writing, so you don't just shoot yourself in the foot.)

Red Hat is high quality distribution, Knoppix is mostly for running off CD, without installing on hard drive.

I just had another issue surface last night. I went to run Civ III through Cedega. It would not start up for some reason. I had just started a game the night before, so I thought possibly it was because of a scratched CD, as it does have one large scratch that runs the entire length of the CD on it. I get the orginal splash screen and then nothing else will come up. Take that back I did one time get a message to insert the CD in the drive.

Here's the wierd thing though. I decided to check it out further and I installed it on my Windows drive and it worked. Will have to try it again tonight on this hard drive for conclusive results but I think it will work.

My next quest, unless I hear differently is to delete Cedega and re-install it, then try to reload Civ III. I had tried to load some other games in there but they did not work. Neither were they listed in the games database either. The games I tried were approved, just not the year of the game I had. Ie. Tiger Woods 2004 and 2006 are listed but not 2005 which was the game I had.

If it is a scratched CD, I am not too concerned as I am going to get either Civ IV or Civ III complete. I just want to know what the problem is.

Thanks, I'll have to try that tonight after I get off work and the guests at our house for Easter are gone. (I responded to you PM)

I hope I'm not hijacking your thread too much bgast1 and Padma, but if I want to try Linux (Comraddict said that Knoppix works best for a trial) on a CD, is there any special preperation to do so, and what would be the best site to go to download Knoppix?

lost_civantares--Not a problem at all. You are not hijacking in the least and even if you were, so what, I sure don't care. I am a brand new Linux user, and I have my share of problems getting it going. You are completely welcome this thread has nobody's name on it, the more the merrier. If you have a spare hard disk, why don't you just install it there and then you don't even need to go to Knoppix, you can try Mandriva like Padma uses, and I have on my system and we can all learn together. Otherwise, if you have a large enough hard disk you can dual boot, except I caution you that you better know how to partition hard disks, install and uninstall Windows as well. Also that you don't have anything not backed up, unless you can afford to lose it.

Padma -- the error messages are as follows, and by the way, this is after uninstalling Cedega and re-installing it again, twice. Also after deleting and re-installing Civ III.

[bob@bob-a81e1249dba ~]$ cedega

I just tried Knoppix. I really like the look and feel of it, but I couldn't figure out how to get online. It didn't find my wireless network card. Having it run from the CD was nice, but I don't think I would like doing that all the time because it was significantly slower than Windows. (Not to mention that my laptop only has 1 disc drive.)
I'm burning Red Hat EE to discs as I type this. I'll probably use it on my desktop if I like it.

Running Knoppix off the boot disc should be significantly slower than running Windows, since you have to load everything off the CD, which is significantly slower than loading things off a hard drive.

Also, I'm not sure which version of KDE that Knoppix has, and how much RAM you have, but I have noticed that the most recent version of KDE is a huge RAM hog.

Padma -- I got Civ III complete the other day. I am off today, so I figured I would try to load it into my Linux drive today and see what happens. I posted the following error messages a couple of threads before but I don't think you saw them.

[bob@bob-a81e1249dba ~]$ cedega
Updating TransGaming config and registry info
WARNING: Your old config file has been moved to config.old. Any modifications you made to this file

Any help in fixing this would be appreciated. If not, no real big deal, I'll just run them in windows. Going to even try a mod if I get a chance.

Yeah, I've been busy lately, and haven't kept up with this thread like I should.

That said, I'm at work, and can't really check my cedega setup. ;) First question: does `/home/bob/.cedega/Civilization III/config' actually exist? If not, I wonder why cedega thinks it needs moved....

I've looked all over for that file and can't find it.:scan: Also, at this point I have decided not to do anything with Cedega until I hear back from you. I have uninstalled and reinstalled a number of times already. The only thing left for me to do would be to re-setup Linux, and I really don't think that is necessary, but will do it once more if I have to.

I'm guessing that your .cedegarc file may be to blame. ;) It is not automatically removed when you remove cedega.

To clear thing up without having to reinatall Linux, try removing cedega, then *delete* both .cedegarc, and the .cedega directory. When you reinstall cedega, it will recreate both of those. You will have to reinstall Civ3, of course.

I still had to do a re-install. I am going to the club to install the urpmi's there. I will also go to easy urpmi. When I reinstall Cedega, do I need to worry about OSS sound, if my sound card passes on the other? I will also have to find the correct driver for my video card, because the one Mandriva installs doesn't pass Open GL, or video acceleration. Any other tips before I end up possibly having to go through more rigormarole, and end up having to re-install again?

Padma--I can't seem to get Civ III Complete installed in Linux (Cedega) CD1 goes in fine. But when it prompts me to put CD2 in, It won't read the cab files. The path it is looking for is drive F. Strange.
Is there any special way to install?
