LK153 - Australia

Light green dot claims 3 oasis, so after a temple it get be a decent producer at size 6.

Blue dot gets a whale off picture, and some grassland post jungle clear.

We are about set for the first Indonesia war. The stack of warriors is heading toward galleys, as I got a harbor in barracks in our overseas city. The iron will be connected in a few turns. If you want to delay the connection some, kill one of the workers laying roads on the iron.

Western Australia isn’t the useful yet. We need courts in every one of those cities to get decent productivity. In addition, they all badly need temples. With the dot map I put up some temples should lock our territory.

I like the dotmap. I'd just move Yellow Dot one tile southeast, because this will let it use two extra plains tiles (one already irrigated, one beneath the spice forest) that would otherwise be wasted. If this leaves one tile northwest of the oasis where the AI could still possibly settle, we can just park the scout there until expansions solve the problem.

Brisbane and Freemantle are stuck at size six with full food boxes, so I'd suggest both should switch to settler builds. The settlers will then be conveniently close to the western sites we're now settling.

I started the temples in Ballarat and Townsville, but on reflection, to have both temples complete would be redundant in terms of gaining access to useful tiles. Townsville should switch to a courthouse. EDIT: No, that's a typo; it's Ballarat that should switch to a courthouse.

Perth is at an inefficient 9 spt, so the workers now roading Canberra's iron mountain should fix that as their next job. They can do so indirectly by mining the hill directly south of the iron mountain, after which Sydney can give Perth a mined hill.

It looks as though we'll get the worst case in terms of the Great Library's yield, with Theology out even before Engineering.

The main tactical point in the Indonesian island-hopping campaign will be never to let the AI attack our galleys while they're carrying ground units. This may require us to found cities purely for their location as ports, e.g. three tiles NW of Bogor (the western tip of New Guinea).

The two west coast cities have settlers already. However, this could cover blue and light green dots easy. That would let our settler factory start to build up settlers for dealing with Indonesia. ;)

I've got it. Sounds like this is the gameplan:

Yellow dot - S-SW from Oasis S of Darwin (NP's suggestion)
Red dot - 2SW from Townville's spices
Blue dot - hill NNN-NW of Freemantle
teal dot - SSS-SE from Freemantle (between oases)

Upgade Warriors in overseas city, then strike Indonesia.
*** Make sure we have garrisons in case of landings!
Courts and Temples in the W
Brisbane and Freemantle - peel of a Settler each
Ballarat - change to Court
and Townsville - change to "something intelligent, Smee!"
Perth/Sydney MM to get Perth to 10spt

That sounds good, except that Townsville should be left to complete its temple. We don't need two temples from Townsville/Ballarat but we do want one.

We just met Russia; she's down Currency and the AA governments. I'm tempted to gift her Currency in hopes of gaining Engineering. What do you guys think?

The usual answer would be that we don't need to make any concessions to get a tech the Great Library will soon bring us anyway. But since this is an odd situation in which Education might actually kill the GLib before we receive Engineering, I'd say we might as well try it.

If we get engineering, please start minimum on invention. I have a bad feeling we won't get that this game from the library.

I could have sworn that I posted my turn log last night. It's missing from the thread, though

Highlights (from memory; I didn't save an extra copy when I thought I'd posted it :()

All four dots we discussed before my set are settled
GLib is obsolete; we got Engineering but not Invention.
We're at war with Indonesia, we've taken Bogor, and the war interrupted our lux imports.

The trade routes problems aren’t surprising. That is why I didn’t send anything outbound.

I home we have some settlers around - I don't want to depend on those Indonesia cities not flipping since we need them as ports to shuttle.

A nice start to the Indonesian war. :goodjob:

For the record, we met Russia and Germany during Tusker's round, and both are behind the tech pace. The only surviving civs we haven't met are Brazil (certain to be backward) and America (probably doing well since the Sioux have none of their cities). The French are already gone.

The Egyptians are the tech leaders, as the only civ with Invention.

BTW, Tusker, did we only get Engineering before the Great Library went defunct because of our gifting gambit with Russia?

After we take Palembang, it would obviously be preferable to head for Indonesia's home island and cripple them immediately, and only then scoop up their other islands. OTOH, there is the problem that island civs can have an obscene number of units at home. So we might land at Bandung, but if we're attacked by an unmanageable number of enemies, it would be all right to withdraw until we have a knight army as a safe stack anchor.

We can raise the luxury rate to 30% so that we won't have to run specialists, except for one scientist. We want our towns to grow normally, and the difference between 35 gpt and 20 gpt is minor anyway.

Most of our cities have good MM for their builds, but Melbourne is exactly wrong building knights at 17 spt. ;) We might let Melbourne take a break from war production to build a marketplace, possibly making the switch right now; we're leaving a lot of gold on the table by not having a market there.

We can squeeze in one more town at 1 on the second screenshot, to avoid the waste of three grasslands (after clearance) and a hill.

Our coast-watching units aren't quite in the right places to block enemy settlement. Ths scout should move one tile to the northeast, and the warrior between Darwin and Freemantle one tile to the north.

The Venezuelans have 158 gold we might as well take for a tech.

BTW, Tusker, did we only get Engineering before the Great Library went defunct because of our gifting gambit with Russia?

Probably, but I can't be sure. The popup saying we learned Engineering didn't mention Russia. OTOH, looking back at 50BC's autosave in CA, I see that Sioux, Russia, China, Egypt, Babylon, and Persia all have Engineering. That's the same list, give or take, that knows all of the techs in the MA so far.

Invention shows dashes with infinite turns to complete? Where is our wandering scientist?

Preturn:
Do some MM including the scientist, though I think we will end up buying invention before 40 turns.
Start some Markets and also want workers to clear the Jungle.
My thought on Indonesia is to keep all cities. They don't have ocean travel yet so I think we can get them entirely before they have far-flung colonies.
Egypt only knows Invention.
70 AD: Start loading troops for next island.
IBT: Knight Templar completed.
90 AD: Sink 2 Indonesian ships with one loss of our own. Land on next island.
IBT: 3 Sword attack our landed stack. We win the first two. Unfortunately, the Knight loses the next one after becoming Elite.
110 AD: We kill all but one injured Spear and lose one MDI. 2 more MDI land. Fill our other boats with the other troops.
IBT: Two demands that I give in to. We could use the war Happiness but it could cause issues.
130 AD: We kill the (now 2) Spear in Palembang and capture the city.
IBT: Not sure if we had met Brazil, but we have now.
Taking the town opened up trades for Lux again. We get a bunch plus some gpt deals. We are at 112 gpt up from 20-30 gpt before.
150 AD: We land on the Indonesian home continent
Invention and Printing press is known by Egypt and Persia but no 2-fer so I wait.
IBT: Several attacks from Sword. We lose our Pike and a MDI.
170 AD: Take out City and replace with Wagga Wagga. We can't afford a flip in our staging town.. We lost 2 MDI vs def 2 units.
IBT: A lot of units move next to Wagga Wagga. I bombard first. Rather than going for the damaged Spear, I fortify against the 3 hp Sword. I think this the better option. The injured units should retreat.
190 AD: We can get a 2-fer, though not the best. Persia won't take gpt at all, I think we did hurt our Rep when we lost the deals earlier. I give them 4310 gpt for invention.
We can get Printing Press, Contact with America, and 20 gpt from China for Invention.
Make several other trades for tech and also sell Contacts for smaller amounts of gold.
We are at 219 gpt and 1730 gold.
IBT: Our defense against the swords goes pretty well, but we lose our Pike.
210 AD: We cannot chase down the injured units yet our speed 2 Knight reinforcements are still a turn away. We do bombard and kill one Sword. The rest of the MDI are fortified to heal.
230 AD: We are able to clear out all units near our City. Indonesia has mostly Spear left.
Egypt continues to lead with Astronomy and Gunpowder over everyone else.
Notes:
Indonesia's stacks are pretty much gone. We can start an offensive now.
I got several Markets built.
We need to move boats back home to pick up new units. Some were on their way there.
