Excellent, that will help the war effort.

What about the stack near Iron Horse Saloon? A few of the workers there have free movement this turn. I was thinking of irrigating in place, then building a road to Zaragoza once the war begins.

That is what I was using that stack for, except before this turn. I was using it so both road and irrigation finished in the same turn. This turn I built the road first so you would have a roading crew available next turn. So I like the idea of irrigating in place.
I was doing the same type of thing with the Ashur crew, but this turn just built the road. So there is the extra slave there that did not move.
There is also a lone slave up southwest of Cheju. It is recently captured and is moving to join into one of the other worker stacks rather than doing solo work.

Mid-turn question. Maghreb has 20,000 gold. Any objection to selling them Clockworks for some of it?

Clockworks was researched as trade bait. Get techs first, then all the gold we can.

Oof. Tough choice. I didn't want a 20-turn deal with the Maghreb, thinking they'd be our next war target. But...

    upload_2021-9-16_20-57-27.png

Incas also have Humanism and Naval Guns. Britain and Germany have Naval Guns. We haven't traded with Britain yet, so this is tempting.

We could attack Turkey after Spain to let the 20-turn window expire, I suppose. Thoughts?

I do not know if this is a good idea.
Trade Iron to Germany for all their gold (339).
Trade Clockworks and lump sum gold to Maghreb for Humanism
Trade Humanism and Clockwork to Britain for Naval Guns, Saltpeter and any gold you can get.

I also don't like 20 turns of peace with Maghreb. IIRC hardwood has very little cash value. Try trading to another civ to confirm.

    Pre-turn:

I hire another engineer in Seoul. Growth in 5, Academy due in 6.
P'yongyang is at 12spt plus an engineer, Islamic Community due in 1. I switch the engineer to a tax collector.
Mooville gets a rushed Explorer, short-rush for Sassanid Clibanarii.

    IBT:

    Clocks > Printing Press

    1390 AD (T162):

    Moving some troops into position...

    IBT:

Maghreb are building East India Company.

    1400 AD (T163):

We send the Mongols Alchemy for Gems and 20 gold.

Take a deep breath. Dial up Spain. War!

    Battle of Zaragoza:
Sassanid Clibanarii kills an Iberian Spearman. 1-0
Sassanid Clibanarii rides down a second Iberian Spearman and seizes 397 gold from the treasury! 2-0

However, Zaragoza is connected to Seville by road. This could be interesting...

    IBT:

We see very few Spanish troops move. I'm so relieved!
South America is building East India Company.

    1410 AD (T164):

Mullah narrowly kills Spanish Crossbowman. 3-0
Enslaver dies to Spanish Crossbowman 3-1

    Battle of Santander:
Sassanid Clibanarii disappoint their commander 3-2
Sassanid Clibanarii die on Iberian Spearpoint 3-3
Sassanid Clibanarii rides down Spanish Late Pikeman, promotes 4-3
Sassanid Clibanarii charges Iberian Spearman and takes 415 gold from the town!

Culture-bomb Zaragoza. Unfortunately, there's still a path for riders in Seville to attack Zaragoza in one turn. I'm hoping that the rPike in Iron Horse Saloon lures the enemy into battle on the grassland, however.

    IBT:

Our exploring EW listens to a Holy Man's sermon but declines to convert. I can't be sure, but it sounds like the Holy Man dies of shock at the refusal!

Spanish troops move, but we still haven't been counterattacked...

    1420 AD (T165):

    Battle of Pamplona:
Trebuchet crushes Spanish Late Pikeman. 5-3
Ilkhanid Footknight kills Iberian Spearman 6-3
Ilkhanid Footknight kills Spanish Crossbowman, promotes 7-3
We get 460 gold from the treasury :D

Sassanid Clibanarii kills stray Spanish Crossbowman next to Pamplona 8-3
Sassanid Clibanarii kills stray Iberian Spearman (near Ellipi) 9-3

Trading time. Incas give us Renaissance and 1933 gold for Clocks.
Germany gives us Gunpowder for Clocks+339 gold.
Scandinavia gives us Sacred Art for Clocks + Renaissance.

I trade Iron to Germany for 339 gold.
THAT DID THE TRICK! Maghreb will give Humanism for Clocks + 3342 gold.

Britain gives Saltpeter, Naval Guns, 204 gold, and 12gpt for Clocks and Humanism.

Several civs know Exploration. We can probably trade for it once Printing Press comes in -- and after that, Free Artistry will be good trade bait.

    IBT:

    Scandinavia boots us.
Britain demands 30 gold. I cave.
    Spain has SO MANY SHIPS!

... but very few troops visible. Strange. I was expecting a SoD to appear by now. Oh, well, I'll take it.

Zaragoza deposes us. We lose three Islamic Pikemen. 9-6
We lose the Trireme in treacherous waters.

    1430 AD (T166):

Maghreb and Inca now know Medicine.

Sassanid Clibanarii kills Spanish Crossbowman 10-6

    Second Battle of Zaragoza:
Two Sassanid Clibanarii ride down Late Pikemen and break the gates. No gold this time.

We could build Buddhist Art in 10 turns (in Iron Horse Saloon). No one else is building it ... yet. I'm going to go for it! Worst case is we fall back to a University.

Sassanid Clibanarii rides down stray Iberian Spearman 11-6

    IBT:

Trash bombardments from the Spanish fleet have begun. Still no substantive counterattack, though.

Trading ship lost in treacherous waters.

    1440 AD (T167):

    Battle of Jaen:
3/4 Sassanid Clibanarii kills Spanish Late Pikeman 12-6
4/5 Sassanid Clibanarii rides down Iberian Spearman 13-6

    IBT:

Spain drops off a couple of Crossbowmen next to Jaen
EW in Viking-land succumbs to a Holy Man. 13-7
    Germans are building Magellan's
    Italy completes Magellan's

    1450 AD (T168):

Sassanid Clibanarii kills stray Spanish Crossbowman 14-7
    Near Jaen...
Sassanid Clibanarii kills stray Spanish Crossbowman 15-7
Sassanid Clibanarii kills stray Spanish Crossbowman 16-7

    IBT:

I see about a half-dozen Spanish troops on the move. No action, though.

    1460 AD (T169):

Sassanid Clibanarii kills stray Iberian Spearman 17-7

    Attack on Valencia:
    Sassanid Clibanarii retreats
Sassanid Clibanarii narrowly kills Iberian Spearman 18-7
Sassanid Clibanarii kills Iberian Spearman 19-7
Sassanid Clibanarii kills Spanish Late Pikeman and seizes the city! GREEN DOT LIVES! 20-7

    IBT:

We see something from the fog die on a Spanish Crossbowman.
Spain asks for an audience. They're offering straight peace. They know both Medicine and Exploration, but they're not willing to part with either. I guess the war will continue, then.

    1470 AD (T170):

Two Mullahs kill two stray Spanish Crossbowmen 22-7
Sassanid Clibanarii kills stray Iberian Spearman 23-7
rSassanid Clibanarii dies to Spanish Crossbowman 23-8

Mekka founded on JJ's site for the northern Silver.

Sassanid Clibanarii kills the Crossbowman from above. 24-8

    Near Santander, Sassanid Clibanarii retreats
    A second one does, too.
A third one dies. Tough Medieval Infantry! :salute: 24-9
Ilkhanid Footknight gets the better of the Spanish invader. 25-9
Terrible RNG. Mullah dies to Spanish Crossbowman. 25-10
eSassanid Clibanarii kills the redlined Spanish Crossbowman 26-10

    Handoff notes:

Overall, the war has gone exceedingly well. Spain was clearly at war with Turkey (and maybe someone else, too). She didn't have much of a field army, only the trickle of reinforcements coming in ones and twos. Greebley can shift gears to full-bore invasion until WW gets too high.

We do need more roading crews at the front. There are a lot of Workers near Ellipi/Santander that could reposition in the next couple of turns.

The stack near Vitoria should be plenty to take the city if they keep moving. The Sassanid Clibanarii near Zaragoza can pick off stray Crossbowmen, especially if the Worker stack near Pamplona roads the mountain N of Zaragoza next turn. They could attack this turn, but that would leave them exposed in enemy territory, and I've been playing it safe.

Iron Horse Saloon is building Buddhist Art. It's a bit of a gamble, but it looks like we're still the only ones building it.

There are two stacks of Workers near Pusan, building 3-turn roads and mines.
