LK172, Civ=France, CCM3, just win

Good to see another Ai gone.
To bad Spain couldn't just surrender and say they wanted to join our benevolent commune. :D Hopefully when Spain has joined us in brotherhood we can go after the Maghreb.
I am going to rush 2 more Steamrollers in addition to the 5 your are already building, to bring the number of Steamrollers up to 78 which is divisible by 3.

I got it.

Agreed, great results in the latest war. Good research progress, too.

As to the steamrollers, fortunately, we have lots of size 21+ cities available for rushing replacements.

I've seen that in base C3C. The AI will avoid attacking armies in the field, but they'll attack with everything they have to take a city. Bad luck that Spain declared when they did.

The page for Armies in the Civilopedia is somewhat lacking in Information.
Is there a limit to how many Armies we can have or can we have more Armies than we have towns?
Is it possible for units inside an Army to advance Regular -> Veteran -> Elite?
Is there a method to have a Unit leave (unjoin) an Army?
Is it possible for an Army to produce a Great Leader?
I maybe confusing this with Civ IV, is it possible to learn a tech that will let Armies contain 4 units?

There's an implicit limit; you need 4 cities per army, and IIRC Civ3 has a 512-city limit. That's 128 armies (but 127 since you'll need at least 1 AI civ alive to avoid ending the game).
I'm not sure whether units in armies promote.
Units can't leave (too bad, it would be nice to update a Cataphract Army!).
Armies don't trigger GLs.
The Pentagon small wonder in the base game allows adding an extra unit to Armies.

Edit: This article has some nice info: https://www.civfanatics.com/civ3/strategy/introductory/the-basics-of-armies/

Here's a thread on promotions: https://forums.civfanatics.com/threads/army-promotions.76469/

Sounds like units inside armies can advance to elite, but they can't trigger new Great Leaders.

In addition to attacks in the city, the AI will attack if the hit points are low enough. Red lined Armies definitely need to be defended. In addition, I have had healthy armies killed when the attack value is high compared to the defense, so low defense armies are not safe late enough in the game. There may also be a component where they can get attacked if it is the only thing the AI can reach. I forget the details but this can effect initial landing on a separate landmass.

I recall a game using horseman armies. If they took even some damage, the civs would attack.

Units inside an army can upgrade. Edit for clarification: Here with "upgrade" I meant to level up in experience (Regular -> Veteran -> Elite) and not to upgrade to a new different unit. I have seen this several times in my CCM 3 games.

At present each city in CCM3 can hold an army. May be I should set this to the standard 4 cities for an army in the next version of the CCM 3 biq.

I remember that there were reports, that units inside an army can be "spitted out" by upgrading an army. CCM 3 has no upgrading of armies, as the only place where this could be possible, is the city that holds the SW Military Academy - and the AI is not able to handle this.

Thank you all for the answers. I was really more concerned about what changes CMM3 might have, besides not being able to build an Army. It seems the changes are we will never be able to put 4 units into an Army and that we are not limited to 1 Army per 4 towns.

I doubt that we will even come close to having more than 1 Army per 4 towns. Though we might come close if we were going for a conquest victory.
Another thought I have is that in Civ 3 the 1 Army per 4 towns also equals the maximum number of Units in an Army. So if you limits CMM3 a limit of 1 army per 3 towns might be appropriate.

First turn report. Good news, bad news.
After trading Furs to Israel for gold, they still declare war on us. :dunno: We survived their initial attack lossing only 2 Infantry.
However, thanks to Greebley:

I downloaded the save and did a little experiment. When I hit 'enter', Israel moved a ton of troops like they were heading somewhere across our territory. All seemed well for about half the IBT, then a horse artillery attacked one of our border cities. It feels like an automove glitch of some sort rather than an intentional backstab -- it seemed like half their army moved past an attack opportunity before they declared war.

I generally expect AI backstabs to come with the first unit that can reach us. Very odd.

Another teaser (thanks to Greebly), besides anticipating destroying Spain next turn.

Midset report: I have destroyed all but 1 Spanish town. That town is far away (screenshot at end of post). Also that screenshot shows 2 Israeli towns on an island.

Some better news, after defending our territory for 5 turns, the tide is changing and Nazareth even though defended by WWI Infantry has joined our empire.
We learned Early Tanks and using "the big picture" I was able to rush 16 Renault FT 17s into service. 6 of the Renaullts are going to form 2 new Armies.

And the remaining Spanish town:

Bleck - at least 6 civs on those islands.

I can make peace and trade Nubia Communism for 7484 gold and 1320 gpt. :wow:
The catch is, Nubia does not have a city. From the best I can determine, the Greeks destroyed the last city around July, 1895 and it is now July, 1898.
The reason I started checking is that Arabia just declared war on Nubia? :crazyeye:

This seems like an exploit to me, so for now I am not going to make peace. Any comments.
