I use some sea power diplomacy on Japan :hammer: by sinking their ships. We make peace with Japan and it costs us Tobacco and 20 gold.

Late Game Tease
Now I feel better about thinking about the attack on South Africa.
To help your planning, I just Traded for Marauding Tactics and we can build Beserkers. Also, we can build our special wonder, Jomsvikings, in 1 turn and start a Golden Age.

I figure 4 Longboats filled with 12 Beserkers should let us capture Johannesburg in an amphibious assault.

Add another boat (or two?) for defenders as well I think.

Yes, please make sure at least one boat worth of spears with more ready to come over. IIRC our UU is very weak for defense.

Wondering who you met to get us caught up on tech. The 4 we know as of 475 AD all had the same techs for sale.

Continuing 475 AD: Sink Japanese ships. Give Japan Tobacco and 20 gold for a peace treaty.
Buy knowledge of Construction from India for 595 gold.
Uppsala switches to building an Aqueduct.
Do some MM.

500 AD: Workers work.

525 AD: Enslaver kills Zulu Impi and captures a Setter (1, 0).

550 AD: Workers work.

575 AD:
Enslaver killed by Enslaver (1, 1); Enslaver enslaves the Enslaver (2, 1) and we get a Great Leader. <dance> Also, we got a worker not a slave?
I find out Great Leader can’t form an Army until we have 10 towns.

IBT: Spearman kills Enslaver (3, 1)

600 AD: Workers work.

IBT: Mongols want to cancel our Tobacco for Wine deal. I give them Philosophy for Wine.

625 AD: Workers work.

650 AD: Great Leader rushes Marketplace in Norrkoping.

675 AD: Our Ancient Naval Explorer finds the Lowlands.
We trade Philosophy to the Lowlands for Silk and 532 gold.
We trade Elephant Training to the Lowlands for 224 gold.
We trade Tobacco, 1204 gold and 52 gpt to India for The Republic.
We trade Tobacco, 237 gold and 5 gpt to Carthage for Marauding Tactics.
We trade Marauding Tactics to India for Literature and 40 gold.

IBT: Our Gem deal with China expires.

700 AD:
We Trade Elephant Training to China for Gems.

IBT: Our Tobacco for Silver deal with Nubia has expired. I renew the deal.

725 AD:
Enslaver kills Zulu Impi (4, 1).

Our Ancient Naval Explorer finds Korea.
We Trade Korea Literature for 71 gold.

Notes and Suggestions:
  • Great Leaders can’t build an Army until we have 10 cities.
  • When Norrkoping builds the Jomsvikings it will start our Golden Age.
    • The 25% shield bonus from Jomsvikings should let Norrkoping produce 30 shields per turn and build Beserkers in 1 turn.
  • Uppsala is building the third Temple we need to activate Christian Community.

I hope we can irrigate those grasslands by Green Mountain. I would have preferred another one of the coastal cities that can gets lots of food with a harbor and port.

This is pathetic. We have 6 sources of tobacco, yet I find nobody to trade it to. I ignored almost dead Arabia and South Africa while looking.
If we had more cash, I could get religion from South Africa. Republic and $209 is up to doubtful. I’m not giving them a GPT deal.
(IT) We get auto booted by South Africa. Sadly, our enslavers are now uncovered.
The Jomvikings are completed, and our GA begins.

775 AD (1)
Now the Dutch have some cash. I ship them tobacco for $13 and $10/T.
I look more closely, and we won’t get religion from South Africa. $260, $92/T and tobacco are needed. I don’t see us having over $2000 soon to avoid giving GPT.

800 AD (2)

825 AD (3)
Our enslaver stumbles on to an enslaver. It kills it but fails to gain a worker.

I give the Dutch naval warfare for $53 and $4/T. It was a bit cheap, but I took it.
I gave Korea tobacco for hardwood and $7. Norrkoping is now building the ballista shop.

850 AD (4)
(IT) Arabia demands tobacco. Like I fear a one-city civ.

875 AD (5)
Egypt now has religion for sale. I can’t get it from them. I hate trying to buy government techs.
The Dutch are suddenly getting some cash. I give them camel training for $42 and $18/T.

900 AD (6)

925 AD (7)
(IT) Carthage is a monster, so I gave them $67.

950 AD (8)
I buy dark ages from India for $1000 and $5/T. I’m disappointed that South Africa and Egypt don’t want this. They never showed owning it. I was hoping it would be a 2 for 1 deal.
(IT) Japan completed World Religion Buddhism.
Turkey completed Dome of the Rock.

975 AD (9)
India’s picture has changed. They are in the next age already. :(
I give Mongolia tobacco for a mere $30. Having 4 spares, it is barely worth it.
I give Indo-China tobacco for a mere $28.
(IT) Germany has completed Hagia Sophia.
We have discovered a new source of gold by Civinator. I finally found that it is underneath the city.

1000 AD (10)
I ship China tobacco for $56.
I give Arabia literature for $38. I didn’t this mainly so that we get some of their cash versus South Africa.
I give Japan tobacco for $192.

Kystbyen Civinator is now building gold mine.

Our new clan arrived. The workers and spear are heading toward Joe's proposed city site.

New civ sighting. The next set should hopefully get at least one new contact.

Summary:

This was a pure buildup set. There are now 6 longships by Linkoping with 2 more heading there. 4 catapult ships are available to bomb any ships that harass us. 23 land units are by the city. It still has just 7 berserks.
4 berserks and 1 spear are being built.

Cash and tech are still an issue. I’ve been looking for any cash scraps from the backwards civs. Some of them should have enough cash to be worth giving them another piece of tech soon. We really need to find a backwards, but rich civ.

I have three longships south of the South Africa / Arabia landmass. We can now explore sea tiles. I want to expand our knowledge of the water area. There could be another pathway to more contacts from the sea. We need more trading partners.

One ship in the area has an enslaver on board. The goal is to join the small stack already on land near Zimbabwe.

The Golden Age has really helped get us set up for the invasion.

The stack of workers between Norrkoping and Kystbyen Civinator is building a mine that can't be worked by either town.

Looks like it is time for the troops to board the Longships and get ready annex Johannesburg next turn.

Looks like it is time for the troops to board the Longships and get ready annex Johannesburg next turn.

With 7 lousy berserks? It still needs several turns to be ready.

I've got it. I'll keep building up our forces a bit more.
We should be ready soon. Got a good pipeline of Berserks going.

I hope you also have good luck with the new contact. I was checking every turn for possible trades. Every scrap of cash helps.

I'm inclined to move the yellow dot 1S to nab the Kelp. Any objections?

My dot gives 6 forest and 1 hill for production. 1 south cuts out 2 forest and 1 hill. We lose 3 production tiles for 1 kelp. I vote against the move. We need production.
