Gameplay Hints
When a tile is in the City Cross of two different cities, then you can change its ownership by clicking on that tile from the chosen city’s City Screen

When you're weak there is no shame in giving into rivals demands. This will give you time to build your defenses as you enjoy the short boost in attitude between your nations

When at War, use fast moving units to pillage strategic resources such as Iron, or Aluminum first, and leave a sentry to prevent the enemy from reconnecting that resource.

Save your promotions for when your unit is injured to speed up healing, and when you promote, tailor your unit for the type of enemy you are facing.

Always have siege equipment before attacking a city. A Swordsman can do more damage entering through a hole in the wall, then trying to climb over it with arrows raining down from above

Examine what resources are before researching worker techs. Why research Animal Husbandry when only have Corn and Wheat near?

Always escort your Settlers. It's mighty dangerous out in the Wilderness.

Play to your Civilizations traits, and specialize your Empire. No use being Charismatic and Aggressive and never starting a war.

Selling resources that you no longer use, such as copper or iron, can pay off nicely over the long run.

Don't neglect your Diplomacy! Pay attention to the Alerts that pop up, telling you what is available out there.

Be the first to circle the globe, and your Naval Units all receive +1 movement.

Animals can't enter your land, so it can be worth the risk to leave your city undefended and use your warrior for early exploration.

Form trade relations with nations that get along with each other to avoid an attitude penalty

If you neglect your military, and your power becomes weak, a neighbor WILL attack you.

Station naval units near your water based resources, and put them on Sea Patrol to protect your resources.

When selling Technologies, shop around for the highest bidder, and then work your way down.

Watch your neighbor civic changes. A change from Free Religion to Theology could mean an arms build up.

Speak softly and carry a big stick, and you will go far.

Sometimes it's better to stop a Scout or Explorer on a forest, hill, or jungle tile and losing the extra movement in favor of safety.

Hey, I didn't know how to cancel rally orders. Set them ... YES, cancel them NO. Thanks for this hint.

Also, I suggested 6 and only 1 got picked up :sniff:

1) Be nice to your mother
2) Remember to go outside ... sunlight is good for you
3) Hate the Romans - play Civ4
Love the Romans - play Civ4
Don't care about the Romans - play Civ4
4) Cancel All Worker Orders: Select 1 worker with orders, hold down the Alt Key and cancel orders
5) There is no hint contained in this hint
6) No animals were harmed in the making of this game

No worries. I remember when I spent a good hour trying to figure out how to cancel rally points... I wanted to limit the joke ones to Snacks are good... at least until I get bored.:p

Slightly off-topic question...How do I add my own custom hints/tips? I see some BtS-specific hints in the file CIV4GameText_BTS.xml. But if I just add another line (and give it a tag with the next number sequentially in order) will it be part of the pool that is randomly selected? Or do I have to change something somewhere else?

I apologize if this is not the right thread for this. I have been playing civ4 for quite a long time but only casually.Well, here I'll get straight to my question

What exactly are rally points used for and is it really as difficult to cancel them as it seems?

How do you select a worker or groups of workers to do a queued list of tasks? I hate continually every turn re assigning. Thanks:)

It's okay, i'll answer it for ya this time, because it's Eid, and if I get them time I'll throw these in the hints & tips file.;) Next time try searching the forum for "rally points" or post in the main strategy thread.

Rally points mark a tile, that isn't in a city. You can select just one city, or multiple ones to sent the rally point as. You can either hold down the shift key and click on cities to select them, or alt + click on one city will select all cites you have, and ctrl + click will select cities on the current continent. Once you select the cities you want, just set the rally point to a tile. To cancel you just select the cities you no longer want to be part of that rally point, and then right click on a city. This will cancel the rally point, but all units already built, and enroute to the rally point will still go there unless you cancel it first. This will help you late in the game, when you are building massive armies, and don't want to bother with moving each unit to the staging point. I use them all the time.

Selecting a group of workers is the same as grouping any units. To give them a queue or work orders simply hold down the shift key. This will work with any unit btw. Select Unit(s), hold down shift key, and tell unit to move to point a, then point b, then point c, let go of the shift key, and off he goes! Anyway, keep the shift key held down, and you can give as many orders as you want to the unit. If you want to cancel the last order only, then just keep the shift key held down and click on the red circle with a line through it.

Hope that helps.

You could mention something about city specialization, just a minor tip about cottages or specialists, etc.

I was browsing the forum, and ran across this strategy guide.

I think it's really very good, and much better then the hints that we have, and probably better then any that Civ has as well. What do you think about replacing the current hints and replacing them with these? I was just going to add some, but they're all pretty good, and enough to have meaningful loading screens.

I'm still waiting for the "Be nice to your mother" hint.

The problem I have with hints, maybe this is caused by BlueMarble - I dunno, the Pane doesn't resize if the 2nd or 3rd hint has more text than can fit into the initial sizing that was done for the 1st hint/tip.

That has nothing to do with BUG or BM. That is CIV. I spent many days trying to correct that, but it can only be done by messing with the .DLL. The problem I found is this. The size of the pane is drawn with the first hint. Any hints that come after it continue using the same size pane. THAT was the main reason I tried messing around with the hints to start with.:p
