Welcome to the first edition of the Lonely Hearths Club for BTS. In the Lonely Hearths Club we explore strategies to cope with one of the most dreaded situations in Civ IV ( possibly the main reason for reloads after the military collapse one :p ): starting in isolation....

If you followed this series in the Warlords format, you should know that we had discovered that a strong economical infrastructure ( through the 3 big C techs: CoL, Currency, CS ( you can add Calendar if needed ) is absolutely vital to whitstand the shock with the outerworld, but there was a strong debate if the beelining Lib was a better choice than going to Optics. Of course that was in warlords....

Now in BTS, some things possibly changed this track: BTS AI tech slower, are more reluctant to tech trades and make bigger armies; there are civs with naval UU that can make your day into a bad one ( the Portuguese carrack and the Dutch East Indiamen ( both bad chosen names, but...)), not mentioning the privateers (remember that they make the water tiles they control unusable); the AP; some new buildings ( like the Customs Houses, the industrial Parks,...); the Power = 2 :yuck: ( making :health: even more important in late game ), the Corporations ( that, among other things, makes a late start cultural victory a possible aproach ); the new spaceship tech path; the fact that AI pursue victories other than space, etc...

For this first incursion in BTS the choosed leader was D. João II of the Portuguese:

Spoiler :
JoaoIIstats0000.jpg

Why this leader?
First of all, his traits: Imp is generally considered a low ranking trait, but it gives a nice boost to the :hammers: part of the settler production, and we are going to build more than in a non isolated game ( no enemies to conquer until middle game ) and Expansive ( in spite of the nerfed bonus on the worker ) has that 2 :health: bonus which is a lifesaver in strongly health limited starts like the isolated ones normally are.

Second, his UU.

Spoiler :
Carrack0000.jpg

A naval UU ( a novelty ) that is avaliable with Optics and that can carry all kind of units overseas. In spite of lacking the bombard ability and of only can carry 2 units, can be the backbone of a early intercontinental invasion or for making a colony ( that plays well with the UB (see below )

Third, his UB.

Spoiler :
Feitoria0000.jpg

The Feitoria replaces the Customs Houses and gives a boost in intercontinental trade routes and 1 coin per water tile ( think about it like a mini-Collosus that never expires )

Like it the first BTS game of the series, I decided to use a new map script. This map was drawn using the Hemisphere script, 5 continents, standart size ( this settings normally generate a bigger continent with 2 to 4 civs and 4 smaller ones ( sometimes with no civs in it, a real colony maker paradise ).

So, here is the start:

Spoiler :
LHCIstart0000.jpg

As we are in a wave of novelties, one more: In the previous instalements we had various requests both to up the level and to get down the level :crazyeye: . Because we couldn't do both at the same time, we decided to make versions of the same game in various levels ( from Noble to Immortal ( if someone is bold enough to play it :p ) ). This will make possible the comparison between strategies in various levels ( the best strategy in Monarch is not necessarly the best one in Prince or Emperor ). Pick the level you prefer below:

Noble
Prince
Monarch
Emperor
Immortal

We ask the participants to do, if possible, a write-up with the victory save and a description of your game ( strategies, techs researched, wars,...). All the info should be in spoiler tags ( to not disturb other people's games ). If you want ( we would like to :p ) post reports at this moments of the game:

Checkpoint 1 - when we have explored the island and are aware of what resources it has. Its not so important when this is, but this is a time to discuss city sites etc. Don't look into a checkpoint 1 spoiler until you have reached this point yourself.

Checkpoint 2 - first contact - when we have met all the other AIs. At this point we can discuss our strategy to get to this point and our plans for dealing with them.

Checkpoint 3 - when we are committed to a victory condition (or at least think we are).

Checkpoint 4 - Victory (or defeat).

The last words are to wish good luck to all :goodjob: . And let the games begin!

Very interesting! I was wondering why this had disappeared from the forums...
I would join, but I'm stuck on a mac, so good luck to everyone else

We were waiting for BTS to restart the series. And maybe we can make a Warlords Lonely Hearths 5 for those poor people that are stuck in warlords :p... ( like the mac people )

I expect I'll give this a go, probably on monarch.

Well ... some surprises.

Spoiler :
We are not alone! Timbuktu (river/forest city) is a stone's throw from the Lisbon starting location. So much for isolation!

I beelined to Iron Working and found iron 2 squares NW of the starting location (figures!). Founded second city oporto 3 squares W/NW from Lisbon to get iron and wheat tile, overlap be damned. I then chopped and whipped a swordsman force, razing one of Mansa's cities and capturing his capital and a satellite city (coastal/floodplains) to the NW. Mansa, we hardly knew ye.

The swordsmen are fog-busting but research is down to 40% at 860 BC. Due to research beeline, no buildings to make in cities, just units ... going to have money problems soon.

However, once Mansa was eliminated, it *is* an isolated start on a small continent, as advertised. I'm surprised the map generator put two civs on this island.

Oh, and we have stone, to the north of Timbuktu. We may want to take a run at the pyramids in Timbuktu, chopping wildly.

Saves corrected.... that was one of the reloads I had to make. The correct map is more challenging , methinks :p . Sorry slobberinbear, for your wasted time  .

P.S. : slobberinbear, next time please post the level you played ;)

I'm in. Probably at Monarch if I download solvers patch too. Latest games on Monarch haven't seen me need to get into a space race though.

I'd love to see if I could generate a great spy ready for when I meet the AI. That could be a ticket to a rapid tech catchup.

Capital site looks interesting - both as a cottage city and a GP farm. With Imperialistic/Expansive its not obvious whether to play early specialists or not. I think I'd probably cottage the capital and run other cities as specialist cities early, but I will have to check the map.

Fast workers and settlers lends to REX. I'm very tempted to see if I can risk overexpansion and recover the economy through developing the land with lots of workers.

Good to see you here InvisibleStalke ;) . I think you'll like this one for your optics beeline -> diplo win strat ( I think it works better with BTS that in Warlords ). Just beware of a AI AP win ( a caravel with a missionary drops in your lands and next turn the AP resolution for the Diplo victory appears .... )

No worries. It was good practice. :P

Oh, and I did post the level, in the title of my post. I'll put it in the body next time. On to the new save!

Oh, and I did post the level, in the title of my post. I'll put it in the body next time. On to the new save!

Shame on me ( I really didn't saw it :p ). And have fun!

I'll try to play tomorrow my save (at least until checkpoint 1) at Monarch

(Monarch level) Challenging, indeed ...

Spoiler :
tundra and desert over a large area = barbarian feeding frenzy. Eep!

Happy Resources: Fur, Wine, Ivory
Health Resources: Sheep, cow, clam, crab, fish
Strategic Resources: Stone (no copper or horses ... praying for iron)

Looks like we'd better research archery and iron working for barb duty.

I've got three cities up in 1800 BC ...

Lisbon in starting location (yep, a GP farm if there ever was one)
Oporto 2E of stone tile (I really want the pyramids). Also gets two ivory tiles, but food will be an issue
Guimaraes 4E, 2N of Lisbon (riverside city getting two furs and two wine, a commerce city)

My immediate plan is to finish Sailing, get some military techs, and build the Pyramids. I also want to settle a city 1S of the northeastern cow tile to get the cattle and 3 wine tiles.

Ive been wanting to play a game as Joao, so I decided to join in the fun :) Playing on Monarch

Spoiler :

Here's the island.
portugal_island.JPG

It's not a very picturesque place. However this works for us because there's plenty of booze to keep our citizens happy!

I took a lot of chances this particular game, but hopefully many of them will pay off. One of them that certainly didn't was the Great Wall.

I went ahead and researched Hunting first, thinking a couple of things. First, in order to emulate not knowing it's an isolated start, I sometimes want to explore and get goody huts. Also for the discount for AH, and potential fog busting. I then went for BW, again because I want my second or third city to have bronze in a normal game. I skimped on work boats to start a little, and waited a while to switch to slavery. Unfortunately I had to start the great wall before stone was hooked up, and missed it by two turns. By whipping I could have gotten it but I wasn't going to reload just for that.

Luckily it was a 6 turn Stonehenge after the failure, not to mention 170 bucks in the bank. Now that stone was hooked up, Stonehenge and Pyramids were easy.

So the first city was on top of the stone, both to save time building a quarry, and to work a floodplains farm. This city will always suck but it has 7 coast tiles, two mines, and two farms available. I think I might be able to at least work all the tiles. I didn't put closer to the ivory because I'm not confident I could work those tiles. I placed the second city on a hill giving it 5 wine, cows, and 2 floodplains farms. By this time oracle was already built; I don't know if I could have made it but I was way late.

Now I knew there was a good chance of a great prophet coming from Lisbon. Thus I had to decide whether to go Monarchy now, or potentially try to found Christianity. I had never actually lightbulbed this before, so I decided to try it. Unfortunately I didnt realize you need priesthood and meditation in order for this to work, so I had to research poly, mono, meditation, and priesthood before Monarchy. During this time I whipped granaries and libraries and am running 4 scientists while waiting for the unhappiness to go down, and for new buildings to build. But it was successful, and now we have a religion as well.

I'm thinking of this in terms of city placement:

Looking forward to any comments :)

Playing on Monarch. Checkpoint 1.

Spoiler :
I settled in place.

Research: BW -> AG -> Mysticism -> The Wheel -> AH

Build: Work Boat -> Warrior (to replace the original who was eaten by a lion) -> Warrior -> Worker -> Worker -> Settler (finished and wondering where to go)

My initial dot map:
lonely01.JPG

I guess I'm going to find both wine cities first. Great Wall would be nice but I'm not too tempted to settle the stone city early as it's IMO really bad. And this island is really terrible place to live in (fortunately there's lots of wine to drown the misery).

I guess I'll get Hunting and Archery next to catch some beavers. After that Iron Working (if there's iron I really hope it's not in the desert near stone, or worse between the stone city and westernmost city on my map) looks good and then I'll better aim for Monarchy (I'd expect lots of rebellion from my subjects if they remain sober too long).

This one surely looks challenging.

I've done that one too often methinks. And my last two wins on BTS were also Diplomatic. Actually what I'd really like to try is either a conquest or a space win. I was literally one turn off conquest when I won by domination in the Roosevelt game. It would be a shame to not get a lot of Great Generals with Imperialistic and enjoy some of the new units in a modern age war.

And I haven't had a BTS game last long enough for space yet. That may be a backup if the AIs look too tough or my lands aren't good enough.

heres the settings
Spoiler :
settings.jpg

I decided i really wanted a challenge so I played this game on Immortal ( i usually play Inca, and can win most of the time on emperor/immortal, but playing a civ with exp/imp will be def be a challenge)

I started off researching hunting and then bronze working to chop down the forests. Then I researched animal husbandry and then wheel pottery. I built up the two work boats asap for the clam.

Spoiler :
368bc00000.jpg

I didn't start my first settler untill my capital was pop 5 with 2 work boats and a worker to choprush the settler and build a road to where I planned to settle my 2nd city.
Spoiler :
24000000.jpg

Once I explored the map, I figured since theres access to stone that I would try and build the great lighthouse then the Pyramids (esp since as philosophical I wanted to start farming great people asap), you cant really see it all that well from my SS's (and this is my first time ever doing a write up), but I settled my third city directly ontop of the stone (even though its in a pretty bad place) in order to get access to it asap and start building the pyramids. I decided to build the great lighthouse well.. because +2 trade routes can bring in a ton a extra commerce and I knew most of my cities would be coastal.
Spoiler :
wondercraze1120BC0000.jpg

So I chopped away and it was still taking longer then I wanted (not being industrial), but I worked away at it
Spoiler :
chopping0000.jpg

and finally it was built
Spoiler :
Greatlighthouse875BC0000.jpg

after getting iron working I also realized there was no iron OR copper, but this wans't a huge deal since theres no other civs to wage war with, and theres only some barbs to get rid off (meaning I'd have to reseach archery which i usually skip)

Spoiler :
noironnocopper0000.jpg

here u can also see where I build the stone city and when I started the pyramids.

And I finished the pyramids 14 turns later
Spoiler :
pyramidsandrepresentation0000.jpg

in the meantime I decided i should try and settle some more cities, and on my way down the southEast part of the island, my warrior lost to a barbarian warrior and I realize my third city on the stone was going to be captured (and sure enough the barbs destroyed it - thats my style of play usually, minimal amount of units and making high risk moves around barbs early on to focus on building wonders), but that city was useless anyway surrounded by all the dessert so I let it go.
Spoiler :
ggstonecity0000.jpg

after finishing reseach for Code of Laws I was very happy to discover confucianism.
Spoiler :
confus.125BC0000.jpg

then I decided to wait untill my first great person and start a golden age while converting to confucianism and managed to research monotheism in the perfect time too to convert to organized religion as well. (On Immortal difficultly you dont have time to waste on anarchy). in this SS, there's exactly 3 turns till my next GP and discovering monotheism.
Spoiler :
goldenage-monotheism-cunfusianism00.jpg

and here is where ive left off, at 300 AD.

Spoiler :
300ad0000.jpg

since it is on Immortal, its going to be very tough to win, I'm sure the AIs are WAAAY waaay ahead of me in terms of expansion and research, but with some ingenuity and luck it might be possible :king:

and ive attached my saved game.

Great thread idea. I am usually a monarch level player, but since I want to try to jump a level, so I will give it a shot.

Is anyone ready for Checkpoint Two?! Playing on Monarch. Hopefully doing this all under one spoiler isn't a problem.
Spoiler :

Unfortunately, it's already 1570. However, for an isolated start, things aren't going too badly.

After getting monarchy I began to do some serious expansion. We were running at 70% science after all. Here's the updated look.

portugal_dotmap2.JPG

Founded Coimbra first because it's going to be an awesome production city. Then Lagos to get it growing because it's one of the lowest food areas. Braga was next for the same reason, and because I wanted to get its whipping out of the way to get cottages developed. Then Evora to get cottages started as well.

Here's a look at the empire.

portugal_state_of_the_world.JPG

I decided to move some cities around because I realized that my dotmap wouldn't work the crabs near the capital. Thus I moved Coimbra over to get another grassland, and moved Evora up to get the fish. Then placed Leiria, which is working one of the capitals floodplains, the crabs, and a grassland; mmore than enough for whipping, and it has room for production later as well. Lastly I founded Faro to get the sheep and plains mine.

I teched calendar thinking Mausoleum but no dice. Also no dice on Notre Dame, but I realized it before researching engineering. Unfortunately ended up with Metal Casting (too late for colossus) Machinery and Construction before compass and optics. My reasoning was that Notre Dame would be worth it over early Carracks. Unfortunately one of our neighbors got circumnavigation maybe 4 turns before me. I probably could have traded world maps with everyone to get it but it would have cost me liberalism techs.

Here's a look at tech.

portugal_liberalism_race.JPG

I think we have a real shot at liberalism, around 13 turns away. Will have to take Nationalism probably, and it may be worth it to start the Taj right away.

The first person I met was Gilgamesh.

portugal_first_contact.JPG

It looks like Gilgamesh, Zara Yaqob, and Ragnar share an island. They also all lack religion. Along the way I met Augustus who is directly south. He founded Confucianism. Finally I met Saladin and Mansa who are to the east, and look like they share a continent. Sally founded Buddhism and Mansa founded Hinduism.

Here's my contact with Mansa.

portugal_last_contact.JPG

He's real desperate. Ive got open borders with the religionless civs but I haven't made any tech trades, especially not that one. I think I smell a liberalism victory!

Here's the world as we know it.

portugal_world.JPG

I think the best plan is to spread Christianity to the heathen continent as quickly as possible. Then shift gears and drop settlers on every landmass possible. If I can get all 3 to convert and then settle a bunch of colonies, I think we will be a real powerhouse.

Downloaded the emp save but haven't had a chance to play yet.

I just wanted to say thanks for setting this up.
