Losing the user interface

Has anybody seen this issue before where suddenly something happens in game eg meet another scout and suddenly the whole interface disappears except for a naked map. I can see units, cities and terrain but the user interface has completely disappeared..it is like the new screenshot option you can have in game but in this case I have not utilised it.
I am using mods and one of them could be causing this issue but interested to know if this has happened to anybody else and If there is a way to get your game back and continue playing...have gone back to old saves but it will still occur eventually again.
