The trainwreck continues.

We'll start with my 1385 save if I can find it.

roster:
Tatran -reserved, awaiting response
Methos - confirmed
AK - still very strange
open -

Rules of the variant are in Arathorn's original game. I'll wait to see if there is interest before doing all the housekeeping issues.

I have no interest in continuing this game.

While I would like to try the concept again, it would need to be from 4000BC.

Thanks for the reply LK.

I don't want to start a fresh game at this point. Maybe a fresh start in an upcoming LK game? ;)

If Tat and Methos are agreeable and we can sucker someone else in, we'll finish the current game.

Looking back.
It's not that bad. We've got the city sides we wanted. No overexpansion.
From what I remember there's no marble and only 1 visible source of stone,
we didn't miss any wonders because of this.
Spamming religion was also a good move. The AI isn't 100% Buddhist now.
Maybe we should have more focused on the Great Lighthouse, all our cities are coastal + 2 GM points.

I regret the team has split, because a lot of the discussions/arguing will be
gone as soon as more goals (great persons, etc) will be achieved.
Anyway I'd already decided before the intermezzo, that I want to see the power of corporations in a cultural game.

Let's continue with the admiral's save.

Do we wish to discuss more? If not, I'll play when I get home tonight from work.
If we want to continue with AK's save I want to take a look at it first to see what has happened.
If not, you can go ahead.

here's the save. keep in mind, I didn't keep a log and was just playing to see if we had any hope of winning. The cities will need MM. There are probably units on gotos. There are probably trades to be done. I see if I can reconstruct my thought process over the next hour or so. I didn't really follow what was previously discussed so if we want to drop back to arathorn's prior save, feel free.

Sorry for the double, but I didn't want this to get lost in an edit. I revisited 1385 and decided this is what I was thinking (or not thinking) when I played. In no particular order:

1. Definitely need to MM the cities. I slowed down growth either for more production or more specialists.
2. I made some trade for ivory, so we have hefalumps to counter anticipated knights.
3. IIRC, when I grabbed Nationalism with Lib was to build the Taj Mahal in Bombay after the duct.
4. Vijay doesn't really need to build anything but culture from now on. The secondary cities are up. There's a decent force in Charlie (I forget what the real name is) and it is building. That's the only real attackable (is that a word) city I see at this point.

Check the event log! I'm going to do another post for housekeeping and plans.

Spoiler :
here's a big screenie I forgot to crop. Note Shaka can communicate with Peter and Darius.

Philisophically, I think we try treat this as a space race game until we have at least sushi and constructive creations. Turtle, speak softly, carry a big stick (well I do that genetically anyway  ).

Diplomatically, methinks we should instigate all the wars we can on the main continent and stay out of them.

As a housekeeper, and still blatantly plagarizing (Tat IIRC), since there are so many ways to win, I'd like to direct our discussions to the following format:

Short term: Tactical stuff for the next set or two.
Mid drift term (sorry, looking at Tat's avie) stuff that we need to set up for in the next two to three sets.
Long range: wild a** plans thinking out side of the box that might work after 10 sets.

and for Methos and Tatran a fourth category: @AK - that was really a dumba** move when you <insert appropriate criticism here>

The problem right now is that we have many needs and not enough cities to fufill them. So here's my ramble.

Short term: continue to send military to Charlie, MM the cities, finish the duct and start Taj.
Mid: build at least 2 more caravels and keep spreading the big four religions. To shaka and DG in that order. Maybe Peter later, but he'll prolly attack us before then.
Long: Naval invasion of Izzy.

Does this format work for y'all?

If either of youse knows someone to fill that fourth spot, feel free to invite. We'd prolly benefit from a fresh perspective.

Our motto is "the trainwreck continues". Let's have fun with this. A moderate level of spam is encouraged. ;)

I'm looking forward to playing this out. I thought about asking bede, but he's been old and grumpy lately. ;)

lurker's comment: :salute: Roadkill wreck on board the lurker wagon.

I had a look at the 1385 AD save.
This game isn't getting any easier.
First, Izzy can cash the great merchant from Economics, while we lack Guilds + Banking. :(
Second, I see too much water. Where the hell are the promised lands?

This will be the only game on this type of map for me. Weird name anyway, "perfect world".
Look at Shaka's starting location. He's has only 3 cities.
Not fair. Everyone should have a chance to expand and when got you
stuck with 3 cities on a large map (doesn't look like a standard size map to me) for 300 turns, then the game is over.

I noticed the map too. IIRC it is standard, but all the land, this is playing like a large map.

Tatran, why don't you play and then we'll let Methos play. That way everyone will have one turn of doing whatever the hell we thought was best. Then we can resume the debate.

I'm idiotically optimistic we can MM for whatever GP we need except the GA which we already have. Two words, survive & expand.

Let's see how our 3 cultural cities are doing.
Delhi : 270 turns to become legendary, this city won't need more culture buildings.
Bombay : 93 turns to reach 7500 culture, currently 62 cpt
Vijayanagara : 157 turns to reach 7500 culture, currently 42 cpt

Now, some trading with France.

And now with Peter before this opportunity is gone.

Although the chances are very low to get the GM from Economics, I will go for it.
So, everything is directed towards this goal, until the confirmation of the loss.

1390 AD (1)

Peter has surely enough on his hands right now  , but I've to decline Genghis' invitation.
De Gaulle and Isabella have good relations with the Russians.

De Gaulle has Guilds too, but won't trade.
Let's make another deal with Peter, we have stone.

peterdeal2og2.jpg

1400 AD (3)
Peter is willing to trade Astronomy. We can only offer Nationalism.
De Gaulle has joined the war against the Mongols.

1405 AD (4)
Isabella got the GM from Economics and we got another great prophet. :(
De Gaulle is willing to trade Astronomy. Let's see what he wants for it.

degauleedeal2hl6.jpg

Research : Guilds is known -> Banking

1425 AD (8)
Peter is the only one with Scientific Method and is willing trade, but
we still have some monasteries to construct.

1430 AD (9)
Research : Banking is known -> Constitution

1435 AD (10)
The AP gives us something to vote, but nothing useful.
(Stop war against GK, declare on Peter or stop trading with Peter.)

1440 AD (11)
We got another great person, a GS.
France has Gunpowder.

1450 AD (13)
Bombay has finished the Spiral Minaret.

1485 AD (22)
The 3 legendary cities have all the monasteries, so let's make another deal with Peter.

peterdeal3wi6.jpg

There's oil near us, but not close to our borders.

1490 AD (23)
Izzy wants something for free.

liberalismforizzyim8.jpg

1495 AD (24)
Peter has got the free spy from Communism.
Research : Constitution is known -> Democracy
I know SoL won't help much, but everything counts.
Civics : Representation (+ FS + CS + Pacifism)

There's a nice continent to the south of Madrid.
The barbs have settled a lot of cities there.

newworldwa5.jpg

Nice set. Liked the trades and grabbing the SM.

Methos, need some post-test stress relief? You're up. :)

Here are some ideas :

1) Capture Hun and try get as much of that new landmass + barb cities.
A lot of those cities are food heavy. We can also build the forbidden palace on this continent.

2) I suggest to skip the Taj Mahal + Notre Dame (both GA points)
Future wonders with culture : SoL (6 cpt & 2 GM), Eiffel (6 cpt & 2 GM) and Cristo Redentor (5 cpt & 2 GE)
There are 2 reasons to have the hit wonders,
first 50% culture boost and second the hits can be traded for corporation resources.
The U.N. (2 GM) + 3GD (2GE) only give GPPs.

3) Research path depends on the arise of the Great Merchant + Great Engineer, otherwise
I suggest to follow the Physics -> Electricity -> Radio -> Mass Media route after Democracy.
As soon as we can do cash rushing none of the new wonders should be missed.
