I'm thinking about Great Old Ones civilization. The main problem is that it is impossible to make separate tech tree for specific civ.
How plausible would be for Great Old Ones to research Republic and Combustion ??? Of cause if they lost all their knowledge...

...
What would really be the point?

"You have raised greath Cthulhu. He eats everyone. Everybody looses. Good going."

Sort of a SMAC transcendence victory in reverse.

Why in reverse ? Cthulhu _is_ Dark Transcendence. Read detail discussion at rec.arts.sf.written, keywords Dark Transcendence.

Wow, people are still using Usenet? I'm impressed. I used to be a major poster to rec.arts.sf.written back in '91-93. Lack of time and lack of a decent newsreader are what's keeping me away now.

Since I've never played SMAC, dont know what the transcendence victory is...although I think I have a good idea.

Still. Dont quite see the point. If you're doing 'modern' day Lovecraftian myth (As opposed to prehistory), none of the lovecraftian entities have enough power to really make a difference in the global scheme of things, barring 'Cthulhu eats everyone' events. In those latter sort of deals, the lovecraftian factors would have TO much power. What real point would their be to playing?

If you're trying to a mod based on those prehistory events, such as the war between the elder things and Cthulhu's star spawn...maybe. But we dont really have enough info on HOW they fought, and they're so alien in how they think that I dont really think we'd be able to dupicate the event in anything even resembling how it should be. That and you'd likely take 1/1d6 in Sanity every time you tried playing...;)

some one point me in the direction of source material pls. I have no idea what or who Lovecraft is.

That is not dead which can eternal lie,
And with strange aeons, even death may die.

P.S. I decided it would be too big for me. I'll try something less ambitious along that lines ("Alien legacy)

To answer Joben's question a little more directly:

H(oward). P(hillips). Lovecraft was an American horror writer of the 1920's and early 30's. One of his major inspirations was Edgar Allan Poe, and Lovecraft's work in turn was an inspiration for Stephen King.

Most of his work was in the form of short stories and novellas, which have been collected into several books. You should be able to find them in most libraries and bookstores. My favorite Lovecraft works, the ones that I think best evoke the flavor of the Cthulhu mythos, are "The Dunwich Horror", "At the Mountains of Madness", "Pickman's Model", "The Doom that Came to Sarnath", and of course the classic "Call of Cthulhu".

After Lovecraft's death, some of his editors and correspondents (most notably August Derleth) tried to patch up some of his unfinished manuscripts and write some more stories in the same vein. Also, there was a fairly strong Lovecraftian revival in the 1980's and 90's, and several authors wrote "Cthulhu mythos" stories of their own. None of these are as good as the original.

The thing on the doorstep. Nuff said ;)

Oh and to all you people playing civ on diety you guys are maniacs I don't know how you can play at that level but hats off to you all. Here's hoping for a multiplayer patch so that I can get better playing some real people.
