Hi

So the idea for this thread is to make it sort of political and cultural fmylife. To share emarassing and funny stories from your country showing how corrupted or dumb some people in it, especially politicians, are. It is also sort of a consolation thread for the British that though they have all the Brexiteers scrambling for EU passports etc, a great contract for sea transport won by a company with 0 ferries, UK minister threatening China with mighty British navy carriers and using hard force, or May shouting a second referendum would be unfair because there was already a vote on it, while trying to present her deal to the parliament for the fourth time... well, you are not alone. These should be real stories.
I will kick it off.

So, our ruler hates the most mr Tusk, who is ex-prime minister, and, currently, one of the leaders of the European Union. He hates him to the extent that when there was a voting on extending his office, ALL the countries of EU voted for it. Apart from his own country - Poland.

It would be enough on its own, but there's more. So, after the "Law&Justice" started ruling Poland, they turned the state tv into its propaganda machine in which stuff as presenting Tusk with the images of Hitler and Stalin in the background is nothing special. Recently, a Belgian journalist appeared in it, saying what L&J was telling about Tusk all along. That he's the puppet of Germany etc. He spoke in French. It was, however, discovered that he is in fact half-Polish and speaks perfect Polish. He lives in Poland. He works for the state tv and is a far right-winger.

Law&Justice hates Owsiak, who is reknown mostly for a rock festival and for a great charity event. They hate him not only so much that they presented him as a toy of the liberal party giving them almost all of the money, but they went as far as removing by computer edition the image of his charity's sticker from the suit of the opposition politician.

Law&Justice commonly mentions that the liberal party wins in prisons. But they perhaps envied them. And during these elections it turned out that in one place, the menatally handicapped people were being brought to participate in the voting, with strips of paper with the name of L&J candidates they should vote on. But they didn't quite understand what they should do, so this was revealed.

Law&Justice was created to fight corruption. So it's funny to see how corrupted it became. One of greatest symbol of it is a situation in Lower Silesia. As the party gave its members and supporters unprecedented number of offices of the state, state companies etc, also local Red Cross received a new, L&J leader. He then proceeded, with his friend, to manage the clothes and food gathered for the poor. Namely, he sold the clothes and used the money for L&J campaign. And used the apples (this is less sure) by distributing them during L&J campaign too.

Law&Justice is extremly anti-communist, lowering rents for anyone in communist forces or changing by law the street names from anyone who was involved in communism in a way (even reknown writers) to, you guessed it, L&J politicians, or other right-wingers. But one of their most reknown MPs was actually a communist prosecutor charging oppositionists, the personal secretary used to be a secretary of one of the generals of the communist junta (who, by chance, was the only one not prosecuted later on), another close associate of L&J leader turned out to have been a communist secret police spy etc.

Law&Justice's most importand boast is that it gave 500 złoty for each child after the first one (they call it 500+). It boasts with it in a remarkable style. When the only ex-prime minister (apart from the leader of L&J) whom they supported died, they remembered him with words "without him, 500+ wouldn't be possible". When the teachers demanded more money, one of L&W replied that they can have children and get 500+. Yes, he did. L&J also distributed a 13th pension for the elderly just before the elections, or tried to use EU subsidies to give free money based on the number of pigs and cows.

Law&Justice loves traditional family values and hates LGBT. Still, people make fun of the ex-minister of defense, who has a tendency to chose his associates from very young guys with no job experience. One of them was kept in office for a long time even though he was using state cars for going to the disco, threatening MD officials to throw them out because he had a tooth ache, etc. What brought him down completely was only when he tried to get money from influencing MD tenders.

That didn't stop another prominent L&J politician. His godson became an official in a wealthy copper company. He was influencing tenders to the detriment of the company. he was not fired. The guy who reported that, however, didn't have his contract extended. But then, his godfather once tried to bribe MPs into supporting his goverment, which was caught on tape, and was never punished.

During previous L&J rules, it allied itself with a populist rural politician Lepper. When asked how he could have allied himself with such a unstatemanly guy, Kaczyński actually said "uh, but we've sent people to spy on him from the start". The coalition ended when it turned out Kaczyński tried to frame Lepper into corruption affair and take over his party. They also tried to frame popular ex-president, by buying a villa and offering it to him. But he didn't accept, and thus Poland was left with an useless villa. Still better than the most recent affair in the special anti-corruption unit, when milions of złoty that were supposed to be a decoy disappeared and, well, no-one knows who took them.

A little scandal arose when it turned out that two close aids of the (L&J) president of national bank are two ondulated women, one with experience not meeting requirements. She has no banking or economical background. She studied Russian literature. And earns more than Putin.

It's not a reknown politician, but the lady (of L&J) who scored the biggest success in European elections in my region is also the one who argued FOR introduction of Euro on TV before she remembered she was supposed to say something opposite. But, as Kaczyński (the leader of L&J) once said, "no cries will ever make us say that black is black and white is white".
I like the other mistake of this lady more. She shared this photo saying "I am writing to you (oh my voters)"

So not only is she not using a computer, but an old writing machine, but she forgot one needs to put paper in it.

During negotiations over EU voting power, our president from L&J actually said Poland should get more votes, because, if it wasn't for Germany and ww2, we would have much bigger population.

Poland had historically excellent relations with Iran. But it tries to please USA and, for the sake of it, Israel, so much that it agreed to organise a conference on iran without inviting Iran. And then our USA and Israeli guest actually attacked Poland verbally demanding money, during this conference and after. Because they believe Jewish organisations should get the properties that Polish Jews had and which had no inheritors because Germany killed them all during Holocaust.

Poland also organised a conference on global warming, in the centre of local coal mining industry. And our president actually said that we're going to use coal for 200 more years. Poland thus deservingly got the award for being the biggest obstacle in fighting global warming. So once again, we organised a conference to be offended. But this time deservingly.

Our current president before EU elections said that anyone against our membership in EU is this and that and we should write this membership in the consitution. This coming from the person who a bit earlier called EU "the make-believe community that does not do much for Poles" and removed its flag from the presidential palace. Which came from the person who was chosen as a candidate for the president due to his appraised work as MEP.

Right now L&J hates Muslims and scared people with Muslim refugees. Strangely enough not many years before L&J was in avangarde of demanding that we open our borders for Muslim refugees. From Chechnya. Just because it would piss Russia off.

Ryszard Czarnecki, currently a Polish MEP, had great fun pointing the full, not quite Polish, name of other MEP, Róża Thun, as, because of marrying a German aristocrat, it is Róża Graefin von Thun und Hohenstein. But it turned out that, due to being born outside Poland, he had to write his name in the election papers in original spelling too: Not Ryszard Henryk, but Richard Henry.

But then, it's not only L&J politicians that did stupid things.

One of our best PMs, Cimoszewicz, once made a state visit to Kazakhstan. But he got things wrong and on the airport, he visited the high Kazakh officials saying how much he enjoys visiting Tatarstan. Then he did it again, on Kazakh tv. Live. He also made some horrible decisions such as telling flood victims they should have insured themselves (just before elections) or openly admitting Poland joined Iraq war for oil. Which we didn't get anyway.

The leader of the biggest Polish trade union organisation, Spychalska, became an embassador in Belarus later on. She expressed joy at going to "the land between Bug and Oder". The land between these rivers is actually Poland.

The anti-semitic events in 1968 were started by Gomułka. His wive was Jewish, and his son half-Jewish. He was also the guy who ranted at city-dwellers as complaining about lack of coal while he, in his youth, used to gather wood in the forest. And when people complained about lack of lemons (used mostly for tea) he said they can use sauerkraut instead.

One Polish minister of culture during an poetic exhibition dedicated to one poet called for her to stop being so silent and appear and present new poems. She was dead.

Our ex-PM destroyed the socialist and thus contrubuted to L&J success twice. You have to understand he is a sexist guy who, when his grand-daughter declared she's a bi, said "no, she's normal", or praised his minister's breast etc. So he chose as the presidential candidate a lady whose only plus side was her looks, as she's really gorgeous. He did that against the rules and will of the party. But her jobs turned out to be apprenticeships, her PhD turned out to be a farce. They didn't let her even speak at first, and when she did it became even worse. She started distancing herself from the party and now she's a full-fledged right-winger supporting L&J.

Our liberal PM Kopacz famously described the benefits of team work by saying that cavemen would throw rocks at dinosaurs together until they were dead. Sort of as if a doctor and PM believed Flinstones were real.

And a trivia. There is an ongoing scandal of paedofilia cases amongst the clergy. This is not quite paedofilia, because age limit is 15 here, but one priest tried to molest a 15 year old boy several times, but he declined. Angry and jealous, especially after he had a girlfriend, he started writing to the parents of this girlfriend and to the principal of the school he taught religion in warning them against how bad the boy was, and spends too much with shady people like... himself, implying he's his lover. And it was this letter that led to his arrest. The boy didn't inform anyone because, apart from the molestation thing, he liked him, and the parents would rather keep it quiet. it is not politics, but part of an ongoing political debate and an example of grand stupidity.

Poland is still an independent nation? I thought shortly after the state run propaganda went into full effect the nation just became a subsidiary of Russia.

I know the above comment seems completely bonkers, but lets be honest without their recent past these two countries would line up pretty well on policies.

I'm sorry right wing extremists have taken over your country, the place seemed like a nice democracy for about a decade.

Our ruling party has much in common with other right-wingers across Europe. Apart from that it really dislikes Russia and Putin, for historical reasons and for recent ones (the twin of Kaczyński died in air crash in Russia and he, or at least some of his aids, apparently believes it was a conspiracy between Russia and Tusk). So I don't see any reapprochement coming soon. Still, there are some strange ties between the ex-minister of defense (who officially claimed Smoleńsk air crash wasn't accidental) and Russia. Or rather of his associates.

Well Poland was never a perfect democracy. In the 90's it was hopelessly divided between ex-communists and the ex-Solidarity movement. Solidarity ruled until 1993, when ex-communist won. They ruled very well and their votes actually increased from 20 to 27%, but the aforementioned flood comment and the unification of the opposition meant that the right wing won. Still it was divided and plagued with corruption etc (one of the ministers tried to escape to Sweden on a ship and they had to send a helicopter to catch him) In early 2000's the left wing made a great victory, winning even in right-wing mountain villages. But something strange happened. A film director, a reknown one, made a corruption offer in the name of the "ruling group" to the chief of the biggest newspaper. No-one knows who's sent him and if there even was such a group. But the ex-communists agreed not only to investigate the matter extra-judiciary by a parliamentary commitee, not only did they agree to be in minority in the commitee, but they also agreed for the commitee to be broadcasted live. Which, obviously, the opposition used to smear the ruling left wing as much as they could. This brought the first downfall of the left wing and turn to the right in 2005. The right wing was divided between, initially quite similar, L&J and the liberals. But the L&J rules 2005-7 ended in a great mess and scandal, and the ruling party was clearly overusing its power for political gains. But it was not punished and the Smoleńsk tragedy brought new life to L&J. Because until then, the president Kaczyński was a ridiculed and unsuccessful politician. His death elevated his position and thus of his twin (who claimed even that him, not Wałęsa, should be the symbol of Solidarity, and buried his brother with the kings and national heroes). And the talk about the anti-Polish Russian-liberal conspiracy helped Kaczyński a lot too. Meanwhile, the more liberal or independant politicians were leaving L&J and when the party regained power in 2015 or so, it was not only a dictatorship, but a very bitter and determined and vengeful one. So it overtook the national tv without shame, cleared as much officials as it could (even the vip drivers were replaced with new, unexperienced people and now we have a series of accidents), overtook the Constitutional Court illegally and attempted to do it with the High Court too. And so on.

I think that politics, as top-layer of a "democracy" is highly overrated in the total importance of being democratic in a democratic country.

Without a functioning and independent Rule of Law, democracy is like a bucket with big holes, and any amount of water you pump in that bucket of political democracy you think you have is lost immediately.

Much of the "democracy" many developed countries enjoy, is the written in stone boil down of laws from democratic decisions of the past.

One of the most important characteristics of the "democratic" effect of the Rule of Law, is that the past democratic decisions as boiled down in those laws are transparent, consistent and public.
This is in big contrast to the main characteristic of the politics of a democracy, the bargaining process, where many arguments, considerations, slogans, etc, etc are not that consistent and truly transparent on a multiple stage of newsmedia, public meetings, volatile opinions and confidential backrooms. Tactics all over the place.

You need both elements.

In spring cows get twitterpated

Here a cow who broke out of his meadow, decided to swim to one of our islands, and needed to be rescued halfway of that 10 km in the sea.

That's a brave cow. In Poland, there's currently ongoing discussion about a herd of 185 wild cows who roam around in one place. They say they have to be killed, according to EU laws, and assigned 0,35 mln złoty for that task. There was also a case of a cow that escaped and joined a pack of Polish bufallos...

Pick a Trump tweet, any tweet. nough said.

TIL that cows swim.

Would that technically be called "cowpaddling"? :p

A new one.

A right-wing (L&O) MP Tarczyński was beyond himself that his father was insulted and spat on (which is bad indeed, btw).

It is the same MP that insulted and attacked the father of ex-prime minister (and minister of justice, foreign affairs, currently MEP) Cimoszewicz of being a communist butcher etc. Another L&O MP was already sentenced for claiming that without a proof some years ago.

What angered the said MP was that Cimoszewicz's father mentioned some Poles were killing Jews during the war.

But the story is more than that. The said MP went on saying that the stories of Cimoszewicz's father and his heroic grandpa, who was in the NSZ partisants during the war, should be remembered. He mentioned that his grandpa was saving people, including Jews, during the war, and he himself was, as a child, being attacked for being Jew-friendly. And this grandpa was persecuted by the communists after the war.

This raised some eyebrows, because NSZ were not the official partisants of the Polish goverment in exile (which had its own, underfounded etc, but the only specialised organisation for helping Jews in occupied Europe). They were partisants of extreme right wing and were considered quite antisemitic.

Some paper investigated the case. Polish communist secret services received some information that this guy's grandpa, far from helping Jews, was actually collaborating with Germans, handing Jews over to them and killing them himself.

Now that doesn't have to be true. People can say different things.

But secret services also noticed that, for his kind of work, this grandpa was surprisingly wealthy, having, for example, houses and many banks account. It's up to you to guess where did he get this money from.

So yes, this guy was boasting with heroism of his grandpa, who was helping Jews, while it is quite possible that in fact, he was killing them / sending them to death for profit.

People vote for their own, right? One lady (of course from Law&Order party) decided to use it. In each city, she created custom election posters, claiming she's from this very city. She doesn't admit this is misleading.

Apart from it, the speaker of the parliament had to resign, not without much pressure. It turned out he used "emergency state visit transport", that requires two airplanes, lots money etc, for routine visits in his hometown. Sometimes he wasn't using the jets himself, but his family did, and sometimes he was just taking them onboard. He resigned, but he'll still be a candidate in elections. Yes, it's Law&Order

The same guy was accused of sleaping with a 15 year old Ukrainian prostitute. A video existed, but it "disappeard" from police custody. And the Ukrainian in question returned to her homeland. 15 is the limit in Poland, but I don't think she could be legally hired for it. Bah, organised prostitution is not legal. And it's a conservative party.

This happened in my dear town of Rzeszów. A famous boxer, arrested for something, confessed that local prostitution ring has deals with the local police etc. He was afraid in prison. And he "commited suicide" (that is what we call a "serial suicider"). There were 2 dots on his neck, but they didn't want to check it during the autopsy. And allegedly he strangled himself, lieing on his bed, and not the wardens, nor 2 his cellmates, did hear anything. Oh, and there was no light, even though there should be, and the surveillance was faulty.

The constant fight with the judges ensues. The vice-minister of justice (Law&Justice, obviously) had to resign, after it was revealed he headed a whatsapp group of judges who were cursing the judges opposed to the goverment's "reforms", planning smearing them publicly and even paying money to a professional online hater. It is mentioned there that "the chief will be pleased". But, obviously, the minister didn't know a thing.

The minister didn't also know he can not make election campaign for a member of his party during official visit in a town hall somewhere.

The same minister's office was most likely informing rloyalists to the government about confidential information hours after they were reaching them, when it was about a judge that opposed La@Order in other films

The previous government was, to a large part, brought down by tapes in which the liberal and left wing politicians were heard speaking cursing, but actually making serious discussions about the state matters. But cursing! Etc. And also, they were eating octopusi, which was deamed a gran extravagance even though they are quite cheap. The guy who made illegal records in his restaurant, when he was captured, mentioned he was promised immunity then for helping Law&Order bring down the government. Ok, this may not be true. But well, the police seals to his house were broken and, allegedly, the apartment was searched illegally. The police admits the searls were broken, but no, of course, no-one was inside...

And so on.

Currently, the goverment's biggest enemy of LGBT. The TV went so far that it started investigating, if a poster, in which one cartoon twin had an arm around his brother, is not promotion os homosexuality.
It's not very funny, though. The state tv has sent an imposter to an organisation fighting against gay discrimination. She was saying insults against old and religious people, hoping she will be supported in that and will get a nice material. She used professional camera hidden in her eyeglasses.

Another nice news. An organisation that is supposed to promote Poland has paid 5,5 mln dolars to an American company for promoting Poland. All it did was to post several pics with short descriptions. The pics got less than 100 followers, and 11 likes. Moreover, some of the pics weren't from Poland, but from Czech Republic and Slovakia..

A Polish arms dealing company was taken over by the ruling party, then another fraction within it replaced it. The new people were, obviously, completely without experience and incompetent. In the chaotic days when there was no president of the company (which shouldn't allow any deals to be signed in fact), they sent payments to some Turkish scam company, even though they were informed by an official within the company, that it's fishy, because this company is only 2 months old, and it's Turkish, not Czech, as it was supposed to be.

The level of incompetence of this party is stagerring. Such things always happen, but not to this extent. Their problem is that they think they are the only ones who care about Poland, so they think their people, even if they lack any competence or experience, will be better anyway. And this leads to failures in every single field of their activity.

Norway.

Current government is a conservative coalition, which includes the "Progress Party", i.e. the right-populists who will go just a bit further than any other major party to get the "stupid people" vote. They're not an outright racist party but they are the party most favoured by racist voters, I would say. I don't like them, never have. One of the cabinet posts they have is the Minister of Justice.

Earlier this year, the then-current Minister of Justice was apparently targeted by graffiti, vague threats, and superficial vandalism against his private residence. Exactly who was supposed to be behind this was an open question, but vague and not-so-vague accusations were directed against a nebulous circle of leftist activists centered around a multicultural radical theatre group. Things escalated and then suddenly someone set fire to the man's family car, parked outside his home. Police investigated and put some actual effort into doing it properly. Threats and acts of arson directed against the Minister of Justice's family residence are not to be taken lightly.

Then they announced a suspect. The Minister's own wife. Yeeeah, seems she'd been doing it all so her family would look like poor victims of those nasty unspecified leftist activists. Minister resigned in order to stand by his woman. (Side note; this party has held this cabinet post since 2013 and this dude was the fourth Minister who had to resign from the post since then. They're using them up like drummers for Spinal Tap.)

I just came to think of this case now because it was just made public yesterday that the ex-Minister's wife has a prior criminal history (granted, back when she was in her teens and twenties), several convictions across most of the 1980s, for theft, fraud and forgery.

Oh, hee hee hee. Hee hee hee.

This thread is exactly what people mean when they talk about globalists.

Well, having read the article, I gather that the calling for the Poles to come back was just part of what he said. He mostly indicated a serious problem: that people think things will sort themselves out and do not apply for resident status etc, even though they have to, in the current situation. Only 27% did what they should. So he is right, very right, to mention that problem. And the idiotic in its over-the-top carelessness optimism of my compatriots who do not care about the legality of their stay post-Brexit is stagerring. Of course he calls Poles to return. It's a very usual thing. Losing people, especially young, productive, and often educated people, is not a good thing for Polish economy, even if Poland gets some of their wages sent to the relatives. We do not have a Filippino model. And the mass emigration is sort of seen, rightly, as a failure of Poland, even it was a success for the emigrants. Therefore, the liberals (Tusk, exactly) were promising they would make the people come back. And so does Law & Justice. Nothing surprising. On a side not. I was writing a yearly work at History studies about the emigration of Warmiaks and Masurians to Germany in the 70's. I will spare you the details, but the thing was that Polish press (under the supervision of the communist party) was obsessed with people not veing happy in Germany and returning. And I managed to find some stats. There were some people who were returning indeed. But it was only 1% of the cases. I think, at least in Poland, there is some trait in our culture that makes us think that the emigrants should come back. Or want to. Antoni Słonimski, a great Polish poet of Jewish origin, has emigrated during the war, to save his life. But he returned. And he wrote a poem about an old Jew in Jerusalem or Tel Aviv who asks about Warsaw and says he gathers money for coming back. But his son will have none of it. His name is the same, but "he doesn't understand". He's already sank into Palestine, future Israel, and doesn't feel any attachment to Poland anymore. But Słonimski did and came back. But people wanted to emigrate so much that a joke was saying: what should you do if they opened the borders? And the answer was: climb the trees (in order not to be trampled by the crowds on their stampede-like rush towards the border).

Thank you Squonk

And the idiotic in its over-the-top carelessness optimism of my compatriots who do not care about the legality of their stay post-Brexit is stagerring.

I am not sure it is that idiotic, being optimistic is probably their best strategy.

I used to play chess with a Pole who was in the air force during WW2,
and my son has several Polish boys in his class, one of whom I have met.

Nice.

But I disagree. As a proverb says, God protects the one who gets himself some protection.

And so, they can be optimistic (even though, seeing the current British politics, I wouldn't be), but they should prepare for the worst case scenario,
especially since the PM is bent on delivering it.

The current chief of the supreme audit service, who is as well the ex-minister of finance (obviously of the highly conservative and Catholic Law and Justice party), was found to earn strangely little from renting 2 houses and an entire building, in his financial statement. It's an affair in its own right. But also it turned out that in the said building, a local gangster, notable for brother businesses, has a "hotel for hours", which is obviously for sex, even without the background of its owner. When he was confronted, he said he will call the (supreme audit service) guy, so they are in direct contact. When the matter was discovered, the hotel for hours was evacuated and not a trace remained in a single day.

I am all for legalisation of prostitution, and for hotel for hours. But it's funny a conservative politician had a self-service brothel in his house, ran by a gangster. And if he lied in his financial statment, he should go.

But the response, until now, is that he's crystal clear and it's politically motivated revenge etc.

It turned out this guy (the chief auditor and ex-minister of finance) received this entire building as a part of a will of some combatant. And he claims he was very busy serving the country, so he didn't know what's going on there. But there were some strange moves. So when he was supposed to mention his property, he signed a deal of sale of this property, and thus didn't mention it, but after that, the transaction was cancelled etc...

Also. There's a school superintendent for Poland Minor (Lesser Poland) region. She's a complete imbecile in general, and it's not the first time she does something strange, fighting gays, or any enemies of the government. She was earlier actually saying she'll sort of forge the documents to help it.
Anyway, she went for a relatively costly trip to Japan for state money. OK. She was building ties with schools in Japan. The problem is that the prerequisite was that those schools should be Catholic schools... in a country which is 0,5% Catholic. And being representant of Poland, which is, officially, a secular country :/
