I was just bored and looking through old elimination threads when it dawned on me... I couldn't find one for luxury resources. So I guess we'll get started--we'll do a standard +1 and -3 with no splitting votes. Please only vote once in a 24 hour period. I think it goes without saying how a resource will get eliminated.

*Note: I am only including standard workable luxuries in this thread (sorry Nutmeg, Cloves, Pepper, Jewelry, and Porcelain).

Dyes in forests are okay, but those in jungles make you chop down a useful tile and make its yield useless.

Salt is more powerful than marble. Not in a good way.

Do we have to give a reason for our decision?

No, but it is certainly preferable.

    I'll give it a go

Citrus --- 21 + 1 Great for a Jungle start, provides extra food, and pairs well with multiple pantheons.
    Copper --- 20
    Cotton --- 20
    Crab --- 20
    Dyes --- 17
Fur --- 17 - 3 Usually comes with an awful tundra start. There are also always plenty of city states that have it. Also, trapping is a poor tech in the beginning of the game.
    Gems --- 20
    Gold --- 20
    Incense --- 20
    Ivory --- 20

    Citrus --- 21
Copper --- 17 -3 Like silver and gold, it provides +1 to production and +2 to gold, yet it can't benefit from a mint.
    Cotton --- 20
    Crab --- 20
    Dyes --- 17
    Fur --- 17
    Gems --- 20
    Gold --- 20
    Incense --- 20
    Ivory --- 20
    Marble --- 21
    Pearls --- 20
Salt --- 21 +1 Combined with plains, salt can provide +3 to food, +3 to production, and +1 to gold, not to mention that it usually comes in groups of 2-4.

Salt --- 22 I tried to think of a reason to upvote anything but salt, but salt is undoubtedly the best lux in the game, especially in large amounts. On a regular plains tile, once improved provides a 3-2-1 in food, gold and hammers which is really, really beast for such an early tile. In addition, you can improve it right at mining, and since mining is so vital anyways, you won't have to delay by researching a second tier tech if you're going in a specific direction.
    Silk --- 20
    Silver --- 20
    Spices --- 20
    Sugar --- 20
    Truffles --- 20
Whales --- 17 Easily pillaged by early barbs, you need a work boat to improve it, and you don't even get the nice +2 faith pantheon that pearls boast. This can be said for crabs as well
    Wine --- 20

If Salt doesn't win this, Elimination threads will have proven to be the worst way to determine a ranking in the history of mankind.

    Citrus --- 21
    Copper --- 17
    Cotton --- 20
    Crab --- 20
    Dyes --- 17
    Fur --- 17 -
    Gems --- 20
    Gold --- 20
    Incense --- 20
    Ivory --- 20
    Marble --- 21
    Pearls --- 20
    Salt --- 22 + 1 = 23 There's a whole thread about how overpowered it is, so yeah.
Silk --- 20 - 3 = 17 Plantation luxes that aren't Wine/Incense are generally frustrating, add the fact that Silk and Spices are very easy to confuse, and I want both of these to go first. At least Dyes is distinctive.
    Silver --- 20
    Spices --- 20
    Sugar --- 20
    Truffles --- 20
    Whales --- 17
    Wine --- 20

Are salt starts that much fun though? Knowing you're going to tower over everybody in no time?

    Citrus --- 21
    Copper --- 17
    Cotton --- 20
Crab --- 20 -3 = 17 (Really good could been either this or Whales I knocked down; but sea resources as your primary luxury are tough; especially with God of the Sea requiring work boats. I chose this one since it hadn't been knocked down yet [unlike Whales])
    Dyes --- 17
    Fur --- 17
    Gems --- 20
    Gold --- 20
    Incense --- 20
    Ivory --- 20
    Marble --- 21
    Pearls --- 20
    Salt --- 23 + 1 = 24 By far the best
    Silk --- 19

Yes they are. Having overpowered starts is fun ! What's your raction if you're playing as Spain and discover Lake Victoria 8 tiles away from your capital ? It's not "Well, this game is over now, I win", it's "AWESOME !"

    Citrus --- 21
    Copper --- 17
Cotton --- 20 - 3 = 17 booooring. A big factor in how much I like a luxury is how the pantheons work for it. +1 culture to plantations is pretty lame and often gets wiped by a more faith-centred one becoming a religion.
    Crab --- 17
    Dyes --- 17
    Fur --- 17
    Gems --- 20
    Gold --- 20
    Incense --- 20
    Ivory --- 20
    Marble --- 21
Pearls --- 20 + 1 = 21 sea luxuries at least yield a food surplus. This one also has a nice pantheon.
    Salt --- 24
    Silk --- 17 (corrected vote)
    Silver --- 20
    Spices --- 20
    Sugar --- 20
    Truffles --- 20
    Whales --- 17
    Wine --- 20

    Dyes --- 17
    Fur --- 17
    Gems --- 20
    Gold --- 20
Incense --- 20 -3 = 17 Another calendar resource but it also usually appears in worthless desert and has no food or hammers.
Ivory --- 20 + 1 = 21 Lets you also build a circus for another +2 happy that is maintenance free.
    Marble --- 21
    Pearls --- 20
    Salt --- 24
    Silk --- 17
    Silver --- 20
    Spices --- 20
    Sugar --- 20
    Truffles --- 20
    Whales --- 17
    Wine --- 20

My prediction would be salt, citrus, ivory, marble and gems to be the top five.

The circus could also be built using the more common horse strategic resource instead.
