YES They are Signing in Maori
OMFG WELCOME ANOTHER SEAFARING CIVS
Honestly, when I first looked at the sneak peak I had a gut instinct that it WAS the Maori. Also the globe clues are definitely not a coincidence.
Cause for celebration!
They added the facial tattoos! He's very animated. First civ with two UI! The pa is in, but it's not the mystery improvement/wonder... still think that's a Cahokia Mound, personally.
Guess this confirms that the leaked list is, indeed, accurate. Also confirms that we ought to be watching the globe's position in future streams.
Sahara el Beyda confirmed as Natural Wonder
Wow. Different. And lots of abilities. Looks like a lot of fun.
Yay, Tā moko!
I'm not normally one to scream "overpowered!" but...
Holy crap they're overpowered!
That looks verrrrrrry interesting to play
But also possibly OP with all those extra tile yields?
I was RIGHT!!!!!!
The Maori, led by legendary figure Kupe, set sail in Civilization VI: Gathering Storm. According to Maori legend, Kupe was a navigator who set sail from his home of Hawaiki sometime in the 10th century and discovered the then-unknown land of New Zealand. Upon returning home, he convinced others to migrate with him to this new land.

Unique Ability – Mana
“Mana” grants the Maori the Sailing and Shipbuilding technologies at the start of the game, and provides additional movement and combat strength for embarked units. Unimproved Woods and Rainforest areas yield more Production, and Fishing Boats provide additional Food and perform a Culture Bomb on adjacent tiles when constructed.
Unique Building – Marae
Replacing the Amphitheater, the Marae provides Culture and Faith to all tiles in the city with a passable feature, such as Floodplains. The Marae also provides Tourism when unlocking the technology for Flight.
Unique Unit – Toa
The Toa, a classical-era melee unit, can construct the Pa – a unique defensive structure that provides combat bonuses for allied occupying units. Toa also have the “Haka War Dance” ability, which weakens adjacent enemy units’ combat effectiveness.
Kupe Unique Ability – Kupe’s Voyage
The legendary tales of Kupe’s discovery of New Zealand inspire his unique leader ability, “Kupe’s Voyage.” The Maori civ actually begins the game at sea, and receive Science and Culture each turn prior to settling its first city. Once settled, the Maori receive a free Builder and extra population in the capital, and the palace receives additional Housing and Amenities.
Agenda is "Kaitiakitanga," the Maori word for "guardianship". Kupe watches everyone's chops, national park/woods additions and CO2 emissions. Treat the planet well (or at least better than your neighbors) and he will like you. (Credits to @SupremacyKing2 )
After first look I have no idea what their bonuses actually mean but I am pretty sure I love them
I like it! Very unique! Very intriguing.
So that might be a Cahokia mound in that screenshot earlier since the Pa looks different.
Also city set looks different, and graphical update for either galley or settler in water.
Haha, incredible animation at the end.
And they'll be fun to play. Interesting and rather unique design.
First off, great job to whomever headed these animations and such.
The abilities are super creative - What's the comparison to + science and culture per turn compared to starting a city immediately I wonder?
Units start in ocean, and +2 Science/Culture per turn until you settle your first city is interesting.
They effectively get an earlier fort and a super powerful Amphitheater replacement.
This guy is gonna rule water-heavy maps.
Palace provides +2 Science/+1 Culture and an Amenity, so +2.6 Science and +1.3 Culture.
