The reason why the Maori get culture and tourism from features rather than great works of writing is because they have all these myths about why different parts of the world are the way they are, so their bonuses are meant to represent that. It's not just because they didn't have a written language.

I got tired of hearing conflicting information about was does and does not count as a feature, so I went in-game and looked it up on the civilopedia.

    Passable Features
    • Floodplains
    • Marshes
    • Oasis
    • Rainforests
    • Reefs
    • Woods
Passable Natural Wonders (also count as features)
    • Cliffs of Dover
    • Crater Lake
    • Dead Sea
    • Eye of Sahara
    • Great Barrier Reef
    • Ha Long Bay
    • Lake Retba
    • Pantanal
    • Ubsunur Hollow
    Impassable Features
    • Ice
    • all natural wonders not listed above

The Maori really raise the bar when it comes to first looks. Firaxis has their work cut out for them in reaching that level with the remaining civs.

I assume there's a mod somewhere that will allow us to watch the AI run its first Maori settler straight into a barb camp? :crazyeye:

Don't mountains count as impassable features, too?

OK, how about Ziggurats then? One builder charge for a zig... do you know how long they actually took to make? This game is full of artistic licence... and TBH Gate pa was arguably the maori's greatest war victory purely due to the new pa design. (even though it could be argued to be a defeat as they fled or would be dead).

I doubt that they'd block building, building over is not harvesting, you just lose the use of the bonus resource (and tile yields, of course). Otherwise that would be quite a restriction.

If it's any consolation, Harald was the only Civ 6 leader I found interesting to meet in the game. Kupe looks like he would join him.

Beyond that, Norway suffers from the curse of the base game inclusion. The more expansions that get added, the weaker and weaker the first civs become.

Presumably the dev team figures you're already played the base game leaders a ton, so now they'll just be AI opponents. We don't want the AI to pose a credible threat, so making the new civs, which the human is expected to now play, more powerful means people get more Achievements on Steam and leave more positive reviews.

I love the concept. I love the idea. Expansion looks very good. But I have one major concern. Powercreep between new civs and vanila ones seems huge... why should I ever pick Norway now?

You can't build over until you have the tech to remove that resource/feature. So it might be a hard rule for the Maori. Again, though, keep in mind they're not restricted from removing woods/rainforest. Just the bonus resources.

Nope, mountains count as terrain. They are not features.

Some of the base civs are still strong though and we have yet to see the rest of the reworks besides England. I have hope that they will have done a few minor tweaks here and there like they did in R&F in addition to the reworks.

    :lol::lmao:I'm in stitches...

Well as it has been noted, the Varu have a very similar ability. Wikipedia can describe it however they like (and they're kind of right because it is an organised chant performed before battle - a bit too long to fully reel off in the heat of battle) but if they are suggesting that it wasn't used to bolster the morale of one side and terrify the other, they are very much mistaken. Plenty of the names of unique abilities in Civ are fast and loose. This is no worse than any other.

I appreciate the game is full of artistic licence; but you are talking about UI's built by builders. The legion is a special exemption to all other units that it also can build a UI. And for good reason. I don't think the Maori should get that same ability, as they didn't specialise in rushing fortifications any more than anyone else did.

That is a good point. The noble savage stereotype of Maori living in harmony with nature is very...stretched. The entire South Island was also ravaged by fires before the Europeans arrived; and that may have been a lightening strike...but I doubt it.

Lols! I can see the Maori and the Canucks being natural enemies from the environmental POV.

Agreed... The All Blacks Haka for example is a celebration of escape. A Haka is a requirement, not a weapon. But it is something that stirs the spirit regardless.

In the game files mountains are listed as terrain, not feature

This is awesome! I think I've found the first civ I'll try out, they seem to fit my play style really well. I like to keep my features untouched, this will be a nice reward for that, and I also like coastal civs and settling colonies :)

I think this confirms that Norway will get a re-design too. Really like the unique take they've chosen for the Maori.
