M16 Positioning Difficulties

Someone made a comment a short while back about Marines with AK47's not really suiting their view of a marine. I'm currently in the throes of learning 3D modelling with respect to Civ, so I figured I'd have a shot at modding in an M16 as a replacement. It mostly worked, though I'm now having real trouble repositioning the rifle to fit snugly in the marine's hands.

Changing the Z value of the rifle (or any other co-ordinate) in the FX and Marine nif files is having no effect. So long as the rifle is in roughly the right place, it is shown in-game exactly as below. If the rifle is wildly out of place, the marine doesn't attempt to hold it at all and it is rendered to the side, un-animated.

The issue is that he seems to be holding it by the very bottom of the handle, leading to it floating above his hand. Any advice on how to make him "get a grip" would be appreciated.
