Safer car design is all well and good, but it doesn't count for anything if you hit a pedestrian.

Kind of , but to play devils advocate , advancements like ABS and electronic stability programs have probably played a role in some reduction in the actual numbers of pedestrians getting hit . But yeah , the effect once hit is unchanged .
