M&M's idea sounds suspiciously identical to Jon Shafer's upcoming At the Gates game. Each population point in your empire represents a clan with unique traits and strengths and weaknesses and so on.
I went to the site and looked.. Looks pretty cool. Out later this year I just might get it. Shafer's pretty smart designer, found this quote about design in his latest blog post near the end
Naturally, I dove into the deep end of this concrete pool head-first by tackling the most difficult - but also most impactful - challenge of all: making it so that learning the game was, you know, not nigh-impossible for a human adult of above-average intelligence.
At the same time though, I absolutely didn't want to achieve this by simply "dumbing things down" and making the game mechanics themselves simpler. You see, that's cheating. And I'm no cheater.
