Btw, what do you think of this ICS style? Messed about with it in a Rome game, and I'm now messing with it with the Americans (Btw American UA is really nice now <.< feels like playing with Maphack and really easy to setup new cities)

Not sure what I think of it yet, it's easy to defend with the tight knit cities, but not sure if it's worth it, I guess I'll have to wait and see how you finish your game. :p

Don't get me wrong. I marvel at your play, particularly the speed at which you can piece all of the parts of the strategy together. I watch all of your videos several times to try to absorb it all. They have helped my play a lot.

This is an exciting video because Rome isn't played much by Deity players.

Great videos. Cant wait to see how the Rome series turns out. I am learning a lot, hoping to move up from Immortal soon.

I'm still not convinced that the current version of ICS (what I do here, sort of) is effective enough to want to do it. At the beginning of the game, you had specialist slots in libraries, so it was good to do. (the game is still tech tree focused) You can still specialize for merchants (from markets/banks) and maybe engineers (workshop, but slower) and obviously you can do it for Artists. (though it's counter productive)

I know. I have a variety of people that come out questioning this or that every once in awhile. People just have to keep in mind that I'm trying to show something, rather than record a HoF style game. (which, IMO takes far more rerolling than I ever do. usually just 2-3 tries for a non-garbage start)

They are for marathon games. (pre-patch) They're very effective on slower game speeds. It's just that their UU's go obsolete fast, have no combat special promotions, and on Quick speed +25% building production is rarely noticed given that buildings are produced rather fast there.

That's probably why I think Rome's UA kind of underwhelming. I play quick all the time.

With Arabia that GM thing looks stupidly fun. Not sure how it stacks up at higher difficulties or how exactly I would use the GMs (Custum houses in Capital with Commerce or on City States buying them out with Patronage)

    yeah... Arabia or Persia.

I think you can kick out GMs earlier and faster than GSs or GEs. (market + banks vs. universities + public schools vs. workshop/windmill/factory)

    edit:

lol - Arabia picks up some late game GMs and settles them on Oil... ugh gold over kill.

Can you setup a GM on an Oasis? That also seems like Gold Overkill.

thankfully no. You can't improve an Oasis.

Messing about with a game. (only on emperor)

Decided to go Liberty into Piety to expand fairly aggressively. However I'm debating on the Value of Piety. It certainly let me initially expand faster, but I can't help but have a nagging feeling that if I stuck it out I would get Mercantilism faster, at which point my almost constant bank roll would be pretty darn scary, and I could just buy a lot of temples.

GMs are kicking in and it's pretty darn funny though.

you can stop at Organized Religion then shift into Commerce. There's absolutely no need to continue in Piety after that. (though, Theocracy is 10% more, but I'm not sure it's effective, gold wise. Maybe after going through Commerce)

This strategy is working well with Aztecs in my current game (Emperor just for testing). I'm not sticking to the 3 tile ICS grid so much, but I am REXing a lot more than I usually would with Aztecs and it was easy to grab an early tech lead. I only had 2 iron near me though so I had to save up 1000 gold to steal a cultural CS with 6 iron that was allied with my neighbor (Rome!). It was funny when Rome DoWed me very early and sent over a bunch of warriors, but I was spamming out Jaguars like no tomorrow and was able to upgrade 2 to swords right before they got to my city. The next turn was like a scene from Monty Python and the Holy Grail ("Run away! Run away!").

yeah, I think the AI has some code in there to realize that they're going to get boned. It's always funny to watch them charge you, just to see them run away the next turn when you bring forces to bear.

Likely you won't need 1000g to steal the cultural CS from the Romans, unless you're still trying to overcome the negative influence of them fighting with you (if that was there). Sometimes 500g is enough to get it, with another 250g to boost it up.

My concern isn't so much speed, it's more the fact that after you get mercantilism you can get 1 point Rationalism and really make that extra gold work.

But ya, just from messing about with it on emperor, has some serious runaway potential, has a relatively weak early game that you have to make up with some Archer/Chariot Archer play, however it should scale decently well with Immortal/Deity, since the AI have more gold to trade and right now it's a bit of a bottleneck at times where I stare at the AIs gold.

However you can literally buy out a war... Sitting on 90 GPT surplus at the end of medieval, (Turn 130ish) on just 5 cities.

I think Liberty/Piety (down to Organized Religion)/Commerce plays out better if you have more space to safely expand, but you should go straight for Commerce if you have less than 4-5 spots to put cities.

found the initial save and added it to the first post.

Unfortunately I only just checked it, and it's the 'after turn 0' autosave, rather than the 'pre-settling' autosave. So you have to take the city location for Rome and my initial warrior move, but that's it.

@MadDjinn: there really is not much I could say to improve your gameplay (actually I find a lot of tips from your games to improve myself...)

However, there is one minor thing I recognised in all of your videos (iirc):

You upgrade your units "straight away". You don't need to do that! FE, you can move a 4-move unit 3 tiles to the front and THEN upgrade it, and have an upgraded unit 3 more tiles towards the point you will need it ;)

I nearly always upgrade my units after moving them x-1 movement points towards the front (if it is in my territory, of course!)

Love the Vids. Have helped me improve my play a lot. I have one request. I would find it useful if you turned on the option to display the scores in the interface.

I turned it on a while back and like it, but especially while watching your vids, I think it would be useful to see when you are starting to catch up and pass the other civs.

Just an idea. Thanks again for all the help.
