Why is this a major defeat from my vampire?, I have 49 attacking 38. I also have a battering ram that seems to do nothing. I don't see the city having medieval walls?
    Thanks

The ram bonus only applies to melee and anti-cav class, iirc.

Correct. I assumed vampire was melee. Even without the ram though, why is my 49 vs their 38 a major defeat?

Because your vampire will lose much more hp than the city? Since damage to the city is mitigated by the walls)

The "major defeat" display doesn't mean a whole lot in the context of attacking a city.

City Walls have 85% resistance to direct attacks (“melee” type attacks, not just melee class units.)
So even though your vampire has a ~54% raw strength advantage, that’s getting cut down to about 1/7th of what it was.

    hence the disparity.

Why not just make the walls show the “proper” strength? For one it would psychologically ruin sieges. Players wouldn’t do it. Second, if they used a high strength value, counterattack would slaughter any attacker. So instead we get lower strength with a huge resistance.

Vampires only attack at half strength during the day.*

Ancient fortifications may also have used wooden pikes.

It may have helped them stake their claims.

It's no good, I can't work garlic into a silly pun or joke. Oh well.
