It was like our Miami (+ganja) , just in Egypt..
Bad news to wake up with, interesting what will Mubarak do.
Also I hope I won't hear of people that I know that were there.. :(

TABA, Egypt (Reuters) - At least 22 people were killed in back-to-back bombings in Egyptian resorts packed with Israeli tourists, and Israel said it appeared to be the work of al Qaeda.

The toll looked certain to rise Friday, with Israeli officials saying 38 people were missing and bodies remained buried in the rubble of the Taba Hilton, on Egypt's border with Israel, after a truck bomb sheared off a big chunk of the hotel.

The attack was followed by blasts at two backpacker resorts further south on Egypt's Sinai Peninsula, crowded with Israelis vacationing there during a week-long Jewish holiday despite official warnings they might be targeted by Islamic militants.

At least six of the dead were Israelis and many of the others were Egyptians. More than 120 people were wounded in Thursday night's blasts, which plunged normally placid vacation spots into nightmares of blood, smoke and screams.

In the aftermath, Israel's fire chief complained of insufficient cooperation in the rescue effort, saying Egypt was using "primitive means" with workers digging with bare hands.

Israeli officials said a truck bomb loaded with explosives rammed into the hotel lobby where it blew up and a suicide bomber detonated a bomb near the swimming pool moments later.

One side of the 10-floor hotel building was torn off by the explosion, cutting off an entire wing of the 430-room hotel.

Israeli radio stations said some guests who were in their rooms at the time of the blast fell to their deaths.

"There were a lot of people on the ground. We couldn't tell in the chaos if they were dead or not," said Israeli Ronit Levi, who had been a guest at the Taba Hilton. "It was mayhem."

Firefighters said the ceiling of the hotel dining room where tables were set for dinner had collapsed and that bodies could be seen under rubble in the ruins of the luxury hotel. Hundreds of dazed tourists streamed over the border into Israel. Among them, an unconscious child and a young woman, her arm wrapped in a blood-soaked bandage.

A previously unknown pro-al Qaeda Islamist group called Islamic Tawhid Brigades claimed the blast on a Web Site. The claim, along with one from another unknown group calling itself the World Islamist Group, could not be verified.

But Israel's deputy Defense Minister Zeev Boim told reporters the attack appeared to be the work of "international terror groups like al Qaeda or branches of it."
"It is not the kind of attack that we know comes from Palestinian terror organizations," he said.

Prime Minister Ariel Sharon called an emergency cabinet meeting.

TRAVEL WARNING

Israeli security agencies had warned travelers against visiting Egyptian resorts on the Red Sea, saying they might be targeted by Palestinians engaged in a four-year-old uprising or by international Islamist groups.

As many as 10,000 Israelis were thought to be in Sinai, a popular budget destination close to home, for the ending of the Jewish harvest holiday of Sukkot. Israel's Foreign Ministry was preparing to evacuate all of them in the next few hours.

Two explosions within minutes of each other also hit backpacker beaches near the resort of Nuweiba, about 60 kilometers (miles) to the southwest of Taba. Two Israelis, a man and a woman, were killed in the blasts, Israeli officials said.

"It was a nightmare. We saw a flame shoot into the sky and then a mushroom cloud. We all panicked," said Ana Usbitski, who had been holidaying at Ras al-Sultan near Nuweiba.

Israeli officials said 20 bodies had been pulled from the rubble of the Hilton and two were recovered at one of the backpacker resorts.

A senior Egyptian official put the number of dead at 15.

The governor of South Sinai, Mustafa Afifi, told Egyptian television he believed the blasts were caused by "booby-trapped cars because we found small pick-ups completely burned out."

Sinai was captured by Israel in the 1967 Middle East war but returned to Egypt after a 1979 peace deal, one of the few that Israel has with Arab countries.

The Israeli-built Taba Hilton was the scene of failed Israeli-Palestinian peace talks in January 2001.
Hundreds of Israelis have been killed in suicide bombings during four years of conflict with the Palestinians. Israelis have also been targeted abroad by bombers, most recently when a November 2002 bomb attack killed 15 people at a hotel frequented by Israeli tourists in Kenya.

Egyptian resorts had remained popular with Israelis despite widespread animosity in Egypt toward the Jewish state.

Israeli officials said ambulances and the army's elite rescue team had been delayed for hours because Egyptian border guards had insisted on seeing passports and going through formalities.

Sad indeed :(

The norwegian papers now claim 57 people were killed and 120 wounded in the three explosions.... Bastards :(

That´s really sad. It must be terrible to know that are people willing to die just to kill you, that hate you because of your ethnicity/religion and that will follow you wherever you go. My condolences to the israelis.

A terrible attack indeed. The confusion in Egypt is like nothing I've ever seen. I didn't think a terror attack could be handled so badly. And still no one has a clue who did this or who it was aimed against.

True, it looks like there were real stupid people involved.. :crazyeye:
And... I got a clue, but.. correct me if I'm wrong -
a. Al-Kaida.
b. Other "Palestinian" related terror group (Hamas/Islamic Jihad seem most likely here I think)

So a clue we got.
By the extent and precision, I'd narrow it down to option a. :mischief:

EDIT: Damn, I could have made a poll out of this!

It could be Al Qaeda or one of its other terror groups (Bin Laden's deputy is Egyptian I believe and still has terrorism connections there), but that's not a clear cut. It can also be Palestinian groups, with or without hezzbollah's support. It might be an Egyptian organization, like the muslim brothers or the Islamic Jihad, which might be indicated by the Egyptian security forces behaviour. It's also not clear if the attack was aimed at Israelis and used the bad Egyptian security in order to make the attack in Sinai, or it was aimed against Egypt in an attempt to damage its profitable tourism industry.

There was an article in either Haaretz or the Jeruselum Post a few weeks ago that said the Israeli security services had been making public warnings about an imminent attack against vacationing Israelis in Sinai, but that the warnings were being ignored, and people kept flocking there for vacation. Here we are a few weeks later and sure enough, theres an attack. I hope next time Israelis heed the warnings:(

Sorry, fits Bin-Laden's profile perfectly -
2 simultanious attacks, large bombs, Israelis + Egyptians + Egypt's (crumbling) economy.
Why Egypt? Well, it's trying to root out Islamic fundamentalism... :crazyeye:

I still go for a.
No other would dare hurt Egypt in such a way.

There were warnings, they were mostly ignored (since we get them every holiday, but never so explicit).
However, a bunch of high-educated Arabs with explosives were intercepted on route to Sinai, so people felt safer afterall..

Also, a good example is my sister, who thought about going and didn't.
When my mom called to say "I told you.. ",
she rightfully said "Well, mom, I'm on a bus right now [in Tel-Aviv], is that safer?!"

Yep, no safe place on earth, it's not gonna get better, so don't make kids. :goodjob:

This is truly sad. :( I cannot imagine myself living in a place where in every moment of my day to day life I have to think, "well in the next corner there might be a bomb".

It also fits the profile of the muslim brothers or the global Islamic jihad, who have a long history of making attacks against Egypt's regime and against those in the regime who support the peace with Israel. And making simultanious attacks isn't something only Al Qaeda is capable of. The PLO had done it several times, and so have other Palestinian organizations - just a few weeks ago the hamas carried out a double suicide bombing.

Actually, according to statistics you're more likely to die in a terror attack in NYC than in Israel

Jordan seems like a much safer place to vacation.

Hmmm... Let's see -
Egyptians hate us from racism mixed with religion + few war-burgers.
Jordanians hate us less, I admit - bit less racism mixed with religion + few war-mini-burgers, but the west bank "Palestinians" were Jordanians.. so they sympatize.

With both peace was signed, but ... hey! Jordan hardly has sea.. and we're talking about Sinai... hardly any Egyptians there - only a few cops who get bribes for a job! And the Beduins are much nicer, and both sides (Israelis and Beduins) profit.

Taba specifically is somewhat different - it is a hotel, so less young folks also get there to enjoy (and gamble.. and swim the red-sea)

@G-Man: Not by a bomb in the bus, tho.

I don't see how it makes any difference.

Why? It's the last place I'd vacation in. With the exception of petra, and if you really push it the Naharayim electricity plany, there are no tourist attractions there. And it's probably not any safer than Egypt - Jordan has a Palestinian majority, who really hate Israelis, and there had been a terror attack there just a few years ago when a Jordanian soldier killed six Israeli school girls.

Then you're a cold bastard who thinks in numbers. Normal people are more effected by the type of threat than of it's absolute magnitude (which is often hard to make intelligible anyway).
