Make random events more detailed & more elaborate

I'm not sure how the majority of players feel about this but I for one really enjoy the random events introduced in 'Civ IV: BTS'. In fact I would like to see this implemented on a larger scale and distributed via a download (or dare I say expansion pack) with more elaborate and detailed random events. Of course this would need to be customizable to cater to all playstyles and need to be done in such a manner to not adversely affect the mission of the game. It would have more imaginative, yet appropriate, game content. I am sure that it wouldn't take much of an effort on the part of the game designers, or even the more than qualified modders/fans, to add the improved feature. It would certainly add to many players overall enjoyment of the series, including myself.

Do any of the forum members here share the same sentiments?

The Random events may be my favorite addition in the expansion after the naval and air force development. I look forward to the random surprises, and the decisions they bring.

I agree, although they do get somewhat repetative, a larger pool of random events would keep them interesting after a few games.
Maybe there should be some events which are specific for difficulty levels or the higher the level, new random events are unlocked adding to those from lower levels.

What exactly do you mean about more detail?
I think that they are generally detailed enough, they get the point across without taking forever to deal with.

Yea RE are my favourtie new entry aswell

How about civ/unit/leader/civic/trait/year/tile specific events?
Maybe events which pose decisions over long periods (i.e linked events occuring over 5-10 turns or so)
Definitely more quests needed
-industrialise the country (build factories, levees and industrial parks)
-make # colonies
-capture all cities along a river
-steal # gold from espionage
and others

It is true that the current random events ARE pretty detailed in that they do get the point across clearly. My thinking was that I wouldn't want to lose this level of detail when writing this into the game. That is I would like to see the feature improved upon without losing the original concept. It would be great to see more World History used as well. As silly as it might sound, I can't tell you how much this game has taught me over the many hours I have spent playing it.

Perhaps the Civilopedia should be made into volumes....

"World Book Civilopedia" ;)

Also, steal some more stuff from the Galciv series :D.

Hey, come to think of it, can't we (and by "we" I mean "someone less lazy than me") add in a bunch of user made random events? There could be an official unofficial Civfanatics random events pack!

I'm pretty happy with the current event system. With that said though, I think it would be even better if there was a larger pool to choose from so that we have less repetition (as already mentioned).

I second that. I like the random events and would want more variety. Also, I think some random events should be even more connected to your gaming style than is presently the case.

I would love to have an official unofficial CivFanatics random events pack and I would be happy to write more random events for it. Unfortunately, I do not have any knowledge of or experience in making a pack. If anyone is interested in doing the technical aspects they should contact me and I will start researching and writing!

I'd like a few unintended technical inovations, something like

"Your idle workers have accidentally discovered Meditation!"

Personally I'm working on getting some new events in my own game in my spare time. I've already got all the kinks out of one event, and that was without using Solver's guide (*sniff* I'm so proud of myself).

Although, with all the events that came with the game I always wonder if my idea is already used... does the game already have a band of gypsies that wish to set up a carnival in your city?

- Yes, and I reject them every time! (no change)
- Yes, and I always give up the 5-10 gold for the extra happiness! (-5-10gold, +1-2 :) )
- No, your a genius TreeFoot! (TreeFoot get's 1 :) )

isn't that a little unbalanced for 10 gold?

Your right of course, I thought that it was per turn, oh well, maybe I'll raise it to 100-500 gold...
Or maybe I'll make another ramdom to balance it out, I'm thinking that after that event there's a 25-40% chance of the gypsies making off with even more gold...

I'm huge into game balance, other wise, to me, what's the point. Might as well go into worldbuilder and just give yourself the happiness. Though I hate to say it, Gypsies don't make people very happy. They're nomads, and have a bad reputation to a lot of Europeans. While I cannot say I share this view point... the reputation of gypsies preceeds them.

I do like the events mostly.... although there are a couple I just find plain annoying.... without fail I will get repeated hurricanes hitting one city and never have the choice to lose population, it's always 3 expensive buildings.

The worst situation I have found myself in was a forge fire. I was playing on a modified marathon (extra extra long!) and in 1 city I built a forge that took me 30+ turns.... the same turn it was built, it burned down in a fire. So I built it again... same turn it was built, it burned down in a fire..... the third time I built it and it burned down the next turn.... at that point I pressed Escape and Quit Game! :D Something like 100 turns wasted trying to get my forge up!! :S

Some throttling on events would be a nice addition.

Yeah, that's like my mine that keeps collapsing, even after I paid for "added mine safety." Maybe paying for that should keep the stupid thing safe. Maybe during a fire or something, we should be allowed a choice to make better fire safety, in order for that event not happening again in that city, or at least not until the next era.

True.
