Hello all,

Any tips for making an ally?

It's the one thing I seem to be struggling with the most.

I always tend to find one or two other civs that become pleased with me. We share same religions and it's all green plus signs - open borders, years of trade, mutual military struggles etc.

However, the option for defensive pact just never stops being red for me. We just don't like you enough.

Yeah you do; you always have!

What am I supposed to do, give in to their every demand?

"Could you spare this for a good friend?"

Rifling. No, bugger off!

Should I say yes?

Should I gift them my gold each turn?

Any advice appreciated.

Don't trade with their worst enemies.
Don't negotiate a trade embargo on them.
Don't bribe an ally to attack them.

Do work on the following:
+1 peaceful relations
... (takes time, don't attack them)
+2 open borders
+2 for supplying/trading resources
... (takes time, don't stop trade, don't embargo)
... (stopping "gifts over time" is okay)
+1..+4 favorable trade relations
... (tribute techs, more techs, even more techs)
... (tribute some wealth, a map, or two)
+? you gave us help
... (give in to demand, requires something to demand)
+? you accepted our favorite civic/religion
... (give in to demand, requires civic tech, requires city with their religion)
+? sharing military struggle
... (give in to demand, attack a neighbor, backstab a friend)
+1..+5 same religion
... (builds over time, requires at least one city with their religion)
+1..+5 sharing favorite civic
... (builds over time, requires civic tech)
... (keyword: sharing, gift them the tech, bribe them to change civic)
