I've been trying to work on a early strategy to take advantage of the Immortals as much as possible, for an upcoming Duel that I'll be having. I play with the expansion pack.
I managed to defeat Isabella in practice last night, on Prince difficulty, with no problems, but I felt that I was really slow in doing so. It took me to 1100 AD to finally get rid of her, mostly because I needed catapults to punch through all her defences in her capital.
Where I've been having the most problems is figuring out how to produce a large army, early. Usually I just build a few warriors to protect settlers from wild animals, and some archers to protect from barbarians, waiting until I have swords and catapults before launching my first attack. This time I want to make the most of the Immortals, so I'm trying to get going with them ASAP.
In my practice game, I grabbed Animal Husbandry right off, in order to track down the nearest source of Horses, then went to the wheel in order to produce Immortals. In the meantime I was going to try to quickly spit out a couple of workers and settlers, in order to found a second city. However, without Bronze Working, I couldn't chop rush my settler, so I had the tech for Immortals quite a few turns before I was able to produce them. Next up I built a barracks. Finally I got my first Immortal out (can't remember what year), but at this point I was already researching Iron-working, and it felt like I had missed the key time to make best use of my UU.
Of course Isabella had teched a bunch, and founded three religions. Since I ignored religious tech, I had the military advantage, so it was still Immortals vs Archers, but I'm worried about what a Human opponent could have had for defence at this point.
Anyways, here's where I'm looking for some advise:
- Should I build a worker right off, or go for a second scout in order to make finding Horses quicker?
- Should I build a barracks before training Immortals, or wait until I have slavery and whip one?
- Is it worth chop rushing a settler, or barracks, assuming that I have BW at that point? The reduced number of forests around my capital really seemed to slow down my base production.
- Is it worth it to Chop Rush Immortals once I can get them?
- Any other tips?
- Any ideas for what I should do if there's no horses nearby?
