Well, as they say, in Singapore you're not innocent till proven guilty, you're guilty till proven innocent. That, I say, is a bigger problem than any specific punishment for a particular crime.
But it's pretty much the same in Malaysia, I think. The public certainly sees things that way. Which makes me think - in such countries politicians are free to provoke whatever bad sentiments they think will benefit them politically. I say freedom of speech must be curtailed to some extent, which is what Singapore does pretty well when it comes to issues of race and cultural differences. Unfortunately, it has not dealt with actual discrimination very well, which is due to a lousy education system.
