This is truly heartbreaking. I woke up to news about this in the middle of the night and couldn't get back to sleep. My heart goes out to the nine victims and their families.

    RIP.

    However:

As opposed to walking into a house or a supermarket and shooting someone, cause in that case it is mixed hatred and mixed indifference or love.

I think they mean that this church was specifically targeted, as opposed to a random act of violence. The shooter intended to kill these people (if not literally the nine who died), as opposed to any people who come along like in a mall or school or something.

The police are already calling it a hate crime (this is a historic Black congregation), so they may be right.

Then he should have said "walking into that church", not "walking into a church".

Anyway, surely the topic is not about this point, i just found it non-helpful that the mayor made it. (maybe in context he means something like you said).

So this is the latest in the decades-long line of white supremacist terrorist acts against black targets, yeah? It's the church established by Denmark Vesey, no less.

What could possibly give you that silly notion? Clearly, racism no longer exists in the US. It is just a myth perpetuated by liberals to try to make conservatives look bad.

Fox News coverage: "If there had been someone in that church with a gun, could they have stopped him from killing 9 people?"

I wonder if South Carolina will fly its Confederate Flag at half-staff today.

Some comments on right wing sites have been a bit over the top. Some are claiming this was another white person pretending to be black.

One of the victims was a state senator.
Also some reports the guy said something about "raping our women and taking over the country" so yeah, looking like violent white supremacy targeting a symbolic black institution. Long history of this. Dating back to Reconstruction.

Could the assailant been an angry atheist?

Some white supremacists are atheists, sure. Hell of a specific target though - a church that's a symbol of black freedom and has been torched by white supremacists before.

A lot of things are remote possibilities but the very obvious conclusion from the specific target is the one being drawn by most people. The American DOJ are assuming it's a supremacist hate crime and news media think based on reports from survivors that the gunman indicated this too.

Also being reported he left people alive to report what happened. Ie spread terror.

Bloody hell. The guy apparently stayed long enough to *pray* with the people there before he murdered them.

This is pretty horrible. A mental health issue or straight up racism & hate .. or both?

Ok. Did you speculate about mental health as a first port of call during the Charlie Hebdo attack or the Boston bombs?

I would suggest that most acts of terrorist political violence in reasonably cohesive and politically stable societies are carried out by people a little less centred than you or I, but that doesn't make them "mental health issues" in the same way Columbine was.

There's an unfortunate trope whereby male white violence is reflexively seen as a "troubled loner" where other types ate assumed to be terrorism (Middle Eastern) or gangs (blacks). The reason is basically that our culture sees white people as the default rather than as collective group, while everyone else is an "other" much more prone to being lumped together and being seen as a collective. So it's not possible in our culture to hear, for example, people asking moderate white leaders to condemn such violence. Or talk about "white culture" leading to violence. As a privileged group we get the luxury of much more individualised cultural treatment and more specific stereotypes.

It's something to be very careful of in talking about things like this.

Well, you could certainly argue that you must be fairly mentally unstable to murder nine strangers in a church. It's not something everybody with a 9th grade education does.
