"nin huey shuo gwo yu? jeh ge huah bu dah mei"

That was sent to me in a recent message from an internet chess friend. I already tried to babelfish it. The 'fish gave me this very helpful Chinese-to-English translation:

"Nin huey shuo gwo yu? Jeh ge huah bu dah mei"

Nin hui shuo guo yu? = Can you speak Chinese? Not sure about the second sentence...

Hmmm, let me think this through....sounds like it would be "nin hui shuo guoyu? zhege hua bu da mei"...and the only thing that makes sense would be "您会说国语?这个话不大美" ...which means (in somewhat bad Chinese) "Do you speak Chinese? This language isn't very beautiful."

The "Do you speak..." part is grammatically incorrect, as it requires either a "吗" (ma) at the end or a transformation of 说 (shuo) into 说不说 (shuo bu shuo) in the middle of the sentence to make it a yes-or-no question (so a correct version would either read "您会说国语吗?" (nin hui shuo guoyu ma?) or "您会不会说国语?" (nin hui bu hui shuo guoyu?).

The second sentence ("This language...") sounds suspect, too.

Of course, I could be wrong...maybe a Chinese person could check my work.

    'Guo yu' is specifically Mandarin.

Second sentence is "This language... somethingsomething."

    Kinda hard without the tones.

EDIT: Lockesdonkey: My Chinese isn't that great, but what you said sounds right. The first part is a correct without the question mark, but incorrect with it. 不大美 is um, really awkward, so I think it might be something else.

Do you have it in characters? It's much harder to translate w/o them. As for the sentence itself, i can only translate "nin"(possibly ni 你) as "you"

I think Lockesdonkey has got it but it is very hard to decipher when written in the english alphabet, and they didn't even write in correct hanyu pinyin.

"Do you speak Chinese? This language isn't very beautiful . . ." Fits perfectly in the context of the conversation. Many thanks to you all. :goodjob:

And no, I was not given the characters, only the letters, as posted.

P.S.: question answered; thread may now be closed.

Oh, for future reference, that was some bad pinyin.

And babelfish will only take Chinese characters. It doesn't take...well, that wasn't pinyin. That was a bastardization. -.-

I believe Lockesdonkey is correct. He is definately correct about the first sentence. The grammar correction was also correct. That Pinyin Stegyre provided was also incorrect, I could bearly even recognise it. I'm not sure about the second sentence, though.

They're not Chinese (besides Tomoyo), but they have taken several courses in Chinese to know the language. :)
