Hi,

Simply to say that Greek phalanx (replace Axeman) cost 35 exactly the same as the Spearman and provides +100% vs charriot and do NOT have March promotion as it is said in the manual...

So now what the point of building spearmen for Greeks ?

Defence (not all-around) bonus against Chariots doesn't mean bonus against Horse Archers. About March, they were going to give it as the unique ability (maybe the old hill bonus too), but they changed it after the manual was printed.

Maybe March was overpowered so they changed it last minute.

Think of it this way, Phalaxes are Vanilla Civ4 Axemen, because now chariots can't counter them, you must either counter them with you're own Axemen or with Horse Archers. Pretty powerful if you ask me... remember the days of the Axe rush back in Vanilla Civ 4?

SO becareful if you're neighbour is Greece and has Copper, because if you don't have you're own metal, you're as good as dead unless you can find a way to beeline to HBR, IW or Fuedalism, depending whether you have horses or not.

The March Promotion in the manual is wrong. Unfortunately, it's not the only thing that's wrong in the manual.

Spearmen are still much better than the Phalanx against Mounted units.

Offtopic, but I'd like to know, manual says Feitoria replaces Market. Did you in fact try this combination at Firaxis?

Spearmen are better against all mounted, cause Phalanx gets no bonus attacking chariots.
