The attack took place soon after Friday prayers in Prabhani, a town about 400 kilometres (250 miles) east of India's financial capital, Bombay (Mumbai).

Three men on motorcycles threw an explosive device into the mosque, a police spokesman in the town told the Associated Press news agency.

Police are searching for the attackers, whose identities are not known.


There were isolated incidents of violence after the blast, but the authorities imposed a curfew to curb trouble.

'Could have been worse'

Dozens of worshippers were inside the Mohammadi mosque when the bomb exploded.

State Home Minister Kripa Shankar Singh told the BBC that the number of casualties would have been higher if the bomb had gone off during the prayers.

Mr Singh said that Prabhani had no history of clashes between the majority Hindu community and Muslims, of whom there are many in the area.

A string of bomb explosions has rocked the western state of Maharashtra over the last year, nearly all of them in Bombay.

More than a 100 people died in the blasts, which were blamed on local Muslim organisations.

As an Indian , I'd say this is the work of the agents of the Pakistani ISI . Their entire existence revolves around proving that Hindus and Muslims cannot co-exist . The fact the that region has no history of voilence is further proof . They just love it when riots happen here . They are the ones who have trained most of the terrorists .

Had it coming ? That really splits me up . Do you know that we have faced terrorism for something like 20 years ? And the number of people dead because of that ?

I was being sarcastic on the expense of the people out there who figure suicide bombers and other terrorists are simply nice but very very frustrated people.

They're not. They're a bunch of maniacs with guns.

IMO, this was the act of Hindu extremists, like Bajrang Dal or something.

Like Riesstiu IV said, why would Muslim terrorists throw a bomb at a mosque? I don't think that's ever happened in before, at least not in India.

Or some unemployed , frustrated , and uneducated fanatic of the RSS/VHP , being brainwashed by Togadis and Co. . This is the sort of thing that makes me want to become a terrorist myself ( who will terrorise the politicians ) .
