Map has no Aluminum (standard, Earth, no mods)

Playing this game on an Earth map, standard size, without any mods. Immortal, Catherine, all DLC, standard speed. There is no aluminum on the entire map as shown in the save file with the map revealed by Satellites.

Do you know why, in the list of resources near the top of the screen, you have -1 aluminum? Also, is it possible that cities have been built on top of aluminum resources? That makes it difficult to spot the resource.

I think it was the result of a aluminum unit being gifted to me by a City State.
I'm pretty sure that there weren't any aluminum resources beneath cities.

This appears to be a common problem. Googling for civ 5 no aluminum give lots of hits. you may wish to look at some of those posts for help. Good luck!
