Base commanders have always made certain areas around bases restricted. I unwittingly went to one area in Jacksonville, NC the first night I was at Camp Lejeune.

Visit Rock City.

They would? Even though Marines have always gone there for 'recreation' since they were first stationed in the area? Even though all other branches of the service can still go there?

No one should have to walk through, visit, or live in Tijuana.

I had to bribe my way out the only time I went. Good times.

The Chair Force do what it want cuh'.

Next they will be telling them they can't get drunk until they are 21. </sacasm>

Dudes and dudettes. The drug cartels have been ramping up their control in Mexico recently. Didn't you hear of that police commissioner that had his head decapitated and put in front of his police station? And these aren't just street crooks either. These are gangs that get military training/bribe Mexican special forces into joining their ranks and conducting hits/escorting drug smugglers across the border.

Yup. This is correct. If some place routinely has too much 'trouble' associated with it, a base commander will put it on a restricted list. If a soldier goes there...and gets caught, its bad news for them.

I'm sure he issued the order mainly with his Marine's safety in mind, but also remember we are technically property of the US Government. They spend lots of time and money training us, its stupid to lose that for cheap drinks in Mexico one weekend.

USMC = U Signed the Mother-effin Contract.

We have a big problem with motorcycle/car accidents and boozing, too. There is a reason we get/give safety briefs before every libo and have a buddy system.

I have to admit it is kind of neat being in a war zone that's right across from US soil. Every time I pass through Nuevo Laredo I like to get lovely pictures of the soldiers, machine gun nests, HMMWVs, APCs and the occasional IFV. And they park those suckers right at border entrance too.

OH MY GOD, THE USMC CAN'T VISIT TIJUANA FOR UNDERAGE DEBAUCHERY! FASCISTS!

like is this REALLY that important, in the big scheme of things? they do not want an elite institution to be embarrassed by the conduct of its members in tijuana. that is quite understandable.
