I'm not sure I see why you shouldn't be able to sell something like that if you're already allowed to sell ova. Sperm are cheap, but women are born with a finite number of ova, men are born with a finite number of testicles. Get rid of 1 too many and you can't reproduce.

Hm, is this legal? I mean i know that selling your body organs is illegal in all civilized countries (including the US), but is it even legal to announce you are trying to make a farse of the system by "donating" that body part and then getting a "donation" (35K dollars) for your time?

Assuming he is telling the truth, and the local newspaper is reporting correctly, he isn't donating his testicle. What he is doing is participating in a medical trial of a prosthetic. As part of this trial he has agreed to have one testicle removed.

I doubt the truthfulness of this claim. I would think there is no shortage of men who have had their testicles removed for medical reasons, and there would be no purpose in removing a healthy organ. Moreover, I question the medical ethics of such a trial, and doubt it would ever get past the review board.

Still, a bad idea for US tv to give airtime to this man.

I know I argue against slippery slopes all the time, but this is one I haven't gotten past. The moment you commoditize human organs, it will become expected of the people, especially the poor, to sell their organs to move up in life or provide for their families. Oh, you are struggling to find enough money to send your daughter to college? Why don't you sell a kidney and a lung to pay for it? You can't keep a roof over your head or food on the plate because Wal-Mart doesn't pay you enough? Well, if you give up some of that precious flesh, you could make bank for a couple years.

I don't want to see a world where selling organs is as common as refinancing the mortgage on a house or taking out a Stafford loan to pay for school.

@Antilogic: Indeed. The poorest people already are prone to do things which further their plight (with the government's silent approval as well). If selling one's organs would become legal then things would get a lot worse for them, and everyone else in the long run.

It's not really a matter of degree. Sperm, eggs and blood plasma aren't organs themselves and are replaceable. Even though new eggs aren't grown in the adult female, you wouldn't ever harvest enough of them to make a difference. Thus, you can take plasma, sperm and eggs from someone and never affect the person that has been harvested (though of course there is some risk with any procedure). You can't say the same about harvesting an actual organ.

It's not a dispute really, I'm just tired of another pointless thread popping up every 12 hours (give or take) that has no real point. It's either something about how dumb Americans are, some obscure failing of the American criminal just system or a pseudo-intellectual garbage thread. Hell, some of his threads are literally titled, 'A quick question about _____ '. Yeah, there's a 'Quick Questions' thread just for that kind of stupid question.

All of the thread spam pushes everyone's threads down off the first page so that his threads (typically with very little traffic) dominate the front page of OT - giving the impression that nothing interesting is going on/being talked about. Which leads to people not posting as much, which in turn leads to not much actually going on here.

All so we can have yet one more thread about

I think this is a publicity stunt for the TV show he was on and nothing more. A less likely explanation is that he is an idiot with no understanding of law. Either way he isn't really worthy of any attention.

Far more important than that point is the question of whether human beings can even be property. I have the same answer to slavery, selling organs, patenting genes, and all that garbage: no.
